At our summer picnic on Sunday (August 19) we’re going to have a lot of fun games and activities for the scouts. However, one of the things that scouts seem to like the best is launching water-powered bottle rockets. Now, if you’re not familiar with how to make a bottle rocket, we have you covered.
- Click here for a link to a NASA website which covers the subject in some detail.
- Click here for a YouTube video (there are others on YouTube, but this had a high geek factor)
- Click here for a detailed instructions from a website that many cub scout families have relied on for a few years
Regardless of how you make your design – one key tip is this: Many designs call for two bottles to be fit together. Do not cut both of them! If they are both cut you won’t be able to maintain sufficient pressure to launch. The bottle that is cut, will fit over the other bottle to give it a nose cone, but isn’t really essential to the design.
Have fun designing your aeronautical masterpiece with your scout – and see you at the picnic.
