…Ish [a.k.a. Hém-Ish, Hamish Hossain] works in the fields of sound poetry, overtone singing and other experimental vocal practices, conceptual sound art, acousmatic cinema, audio art, sonic journalism and happenings.

Born in Calcutta, he was brought up in a cross-cultural environment. His family extended from Indo-Persians and Jew-Baghdadis from the eighteenth century immigrations, to Kashmiris and Sikh-Punjabis both from pre-partition India and Pakistan. He went to an Anglo-Indian school where he enjoyed the silence and reverberation of the church building. Composition being a notion foreign to Calcutta, Hém-Ish was self-taught there. In 2006, his endeavours were acknowledged by the Telegraph who awarded him for his ‘Outstanding Talent’. After a few years as a composer, pianist and music teacher in Calcutta where he much cherished bengali culture and friends, he moved to France in 2010.

In France he developed his ear through his studies in musique concrète and other sound arts. More recently he has turned his interest towards experimental and tribal vocal practices and sound poetry, conceptual sound art and happenings. This affinity with the voice can be traced to his childhood in Calcutta, a nice noisy city full of talkative artisans, chanting traders, street quarrels and random orators.

An instrumental/mixed media work is to him ‘a discourse to hear and watch, treading synchronicity between the sonic and the visual’. Hém-Ish's work is rooted in an actual perception and semiotical structures rather than conventional paradigm or technological impulse. He is interested in the research of sonic macro-morphology of sounds, and in the restoration of a link between sonic material and discourse and perception. His singularity, particularly liberating for instrumental music, is in the utilisation of independent morphological units (the equivalent of a 'word' in literature) as the smallest element for the construction of his sentences.
