Haitian Art Society 2019 National Conference

Paving the Road towards a Haitian Cultural Renaissance

Friday November 15th – Wednesday November 20th

Washington, DC

The Nation’s Capital welcomes the Haitian Art Society for an artistic week dedicated to viewing some of the top private Haitian Art collections in the District, Maryland & Virginia (DMV) combined with stimulating thought-provoking discussions around the conference theme, “Paving the Road towards a Haitian Cultural Renaissance”.

Our weekend program begins on Friday evening with a welcome reception and art viewing on Capitol Hill and continues through Sunday with private collection visits reflecting the past greats, interwoven with the exhilarating moderns. Join us as we view the vastness of over 40 years of collecting some of the crème de la crème Haitian Art that will take your breath away.

Our two-day panel discussions will begin with part I on Monday at the

                         Smithsonian
National Museum of African Art (NAfAM)
950 Independence Ave, SW, Washington, DC  20560

While at the museum, we we will be stimulated by the slides from Marilyn Houlberg's collection, as well as photos of field work in Haiti from Melville Herskovits and George Eaton Simpson. These rare glimpses of art history will be the right backdrop for our conference theme presenters. Dr. Legrace Benson, Dr. Peter Haffner, Rod Heller, John Sullivan, Larry Kent, & Jose Zelaya.

On Tuesday, we will enjoy the Diaspora Expressions Expo exhibit “designed to unveil the hidden talents of artist in the diaspora community” at the Embassy of Haiti. This is a perfect backdrop for part II of our continued panel discussion. Join our panelists, Gerald Alexis, Toni Monnin, Edouard Duval-Carrie, Mario Benjamin, Pascale Monnin and Chole Bigio as we include perspectives from Haitian artists, gallery owners and on-line art platforms.

Our closing dinner will be a great place for reflection and fun at an eclectic DC restaurant as we dine with our presenters and special guests.  Join us for Haitian Jazz and share in some culinary art.
