Our Club The Gwinnett Touring Club (GTC) was established in 1982 and was an active member of the USCF and USA Cycling. GTC no longer formally exists as an active USA Cycling club, however this site is still used to notify individuals of "pick up" rides that are not officially sanctioned by the GTC or its former members. All are welcome to attend these pick up rides but you ride at your own risk. In the space below, a brief description of the club's past members, rides, and rider mentality are summarized. The GTC was comprised of upwards of 50 members. Members have included beginners, enthusiasts, randonneurs, and many former and current road and cyclocross racers, including several national and state champions. Most members just enjoy riding together on quiet country roads in Gwinnett, Jackson, Barrow, Oconee, Walton and Morgan counties. All are welcome to attend our rides but you are expected to be able to maintain the listed pace and everyone rides at their own risk. GTC rides – Our rides focus on steady effort, smaller, traffic-free roads and include over 20 different rides leaving from 5 different locations including: Harbins ES near Dacula, Auburn, Bethlehem, Apalachee HS or the old Walker Park ES on hwy. 11 north of Monroe. The various routes, typically 50-70 miles, cover ~900 square miles of semi-rural Georgia from Harbins elementary school in the west, east to Athens, and from southern Hall county in the north, south to Madison. Our weekend rides are designed for steady 2 abreast riding at a conversational pace with average speeds of 16.5-19 mph depending upon the route and time of year. Nearly every route has multiple shorter options and short cuts along the main route so that all can ride along. The rides, including links to Garmin maps, average speed, how often they are typically scheduled and other information can be found on the Google Drive section of our discussion forum at gtcbike in Google Groups. https://groups.google.com/group/gtcbike?pli=1. There are two versions of most maps available under the Routes & Maps links to the left. The Garmin maps are recorded from recent rides of the route and can be downloaded into a compatible GPS. The PDF maps can be printed for a paper based map of the route.
