Elena Helman
, Events Chair [ehelman [at] mit [dot] edu]Elena is a 3rd year PhD student in the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology (HST) within the Bioinformatics & Integrative Genomics (BIG) program. As an undergraduate at Brown University, Elena studied computational biology with an interest in integrating computer science and mathematics with molecular biology. Her current research at the Broad Institute focuses on cancer genomics, aiming to identify genomic events that contribute to the progression of cancer as well as bring next-generation sequencing techniques to the clinic.

Elena learned about GWAMIT from her peers, and after attending several events, she knew she had to be a part of it! She joined the 2011 Fall Leadership Committee and helped lead the Entrepreneurship Panel event. Through GWAMIT, Elena has met fellow grad women who are passionate about encouraging women in science and technology. As an Events Chair, Elena hopes to bring many more successful events to the MIT and Boston community, covering a wide range of special interests and activities.

As the slogan on one of her mom's T-shirts growing up said: "Women in technology - get used it!"
