      Guoqiang Yu has joined the department of electrical engineering at UCLA as an postdoctoral researcher since 2012He received the B.Sc. degree from Jilin University, Changchun, China in 2007, and the Ph.D. degree from Institute of Physics, CAS, China in 2012.

       Research interests: Spintronics, in particular the spin-orbit torque in heavy metal, 2D materials and topological insulator and room-temperature skyrmions generation and manipulation in thin film system.

Research experience: 

(I) Postdoctoral research at Department of Electrical Engineering, UCLA.

l  Magnetization dynamics driven by current-induced spin-orbit torque.

i)      Demonstrate spin-orbit-torque-driven perpendicular magnetization switching without the need for any external magnetic fields.

ii)    Demonstrate that the magnetization switching driven by spin-orbit torque is realized through chiral domain wall propagation.

iii)  Demonstrated current-induced spin-orbit torque-driven magnetization switching in the perpendicularly magnetized antiferromagnet-based IrMn/CoFeB/MgO structure.

iv)   Observed a large spin-orbit torque generated by current-induced spin accumulation through the Rashba-Edelstein effect in the composites of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2 or WSe2)/CoFeB bilayer.

l  Skyrmion creation and manipulation in ultra-thin magnetic film at room temperature.

i)      First create room-temperature skyrmions using divergent spin-orbit torque.

ii)    First report the observation of “skyrmion Hall effect”.

iii)  Realize room-temperature creation by tuning the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and spin-orbit torque manipulation of skyrmions

iv)   Demonstrate a room-temperature skyrmion shift memory device, where individual skyrmions are controllably generated and shifted using current.

l  Study voltage-induced strain effect on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

i)      Realize large voltage-induced manipulation of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (7000 fJ/Vm) in the thin perpendicular CoFeB film.

(II) Ph. D research at Institute of Physics, CAS, China.

l  Spin-dependent transport in Giant magnetoresistance multilayers and magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs).

i)      Demonstrate TMR of as high as 300% in single barrier MgO-based in-plane MTJs at room temperature.

ii)    Demonstrate TMR of over 200% in double barrier MgO-based MTJs at room temperature.

iii)  Noise spectra and inelastic electron tunneling spectra study in double single and double barrier MgO-based MTJs.

iv)   Utilizing double barrier MTJ with the superparamagnetic free layer as magnetic field sensor.

v)   Study superconductor-induced pinning on magnetization in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid by using MTJ.

vi) Demonstrate over 100% TMR in CoFeB/AlOx/GaMnAs based MTJ, which is highest in the GaMnAs based metal and semiconductor hybrid.
