 THE "GLOBE AND ANCHOR"

MARINES Sites & FORUMS

The photo above depicts The Flag Raising On Iwo Jima as it actually occurred on the morning of 23 February, 1945. S/Sgt Lou Lowery, of Leatherneck magazine,  shot the above photo and  a series of other photos as he accompanied the 40-man combat patrol  up Mount  Suribachi, led by 1/Lt Harold Schrier, XO  of Easy Company, 2/28, 5th Marine Division.

Later that same day, a larger "replacement" flag was substitued for the original flag and photographed by Joe Rosenthal, and it was that photo  which quickly became better known as the Iwo Jima flag raising.

The Links below will lead you to already existing GyG Sites, where you will find options to more sites/forums/archives, etc. GyG's is Old Corps-oriented, and open to all viewers. It is rooted in Marine Corps History, and other military history. Priorities also: Articles, Stories, The Controversial and Unusual, Etc. Much information on GyG's is unknown to other run-of-the-mill Marines sites. Some specific topics covered by GyG's are purposely avoided by the other usual websites; still others, in some cases, just deny certain facts altogether. The content of my GyG Sites represents solely the interests of this webmaster and not necessarily the "party line"; therefore, viewer approval has not been a prime consideration here.  It is not for everyone. (Some just cannot handle the truth) Partake of what you can bear, and pass by the rest.
