'Gunneralikes'

A monotypic subgenus cosisting of the species Gunnera macrophylla. This is a true island-hopping Gunnera. It is found colonizing recent volcanic ashfalls on the islands of the Vanuatu archipelago, and is spread through many other islands in Indonesia, Borneo, the Phillipines and New Guinea as well as the Malay Peninsula. This widespread distribution implies recent and ongoing processes of dispersal across water probably a birds.

G.macrophylla is seen the foreground of this photo at Kew, while G. tinctoria (Panke) is the background on the lake edge.
