Hot Water Extraction

Hot Water Extraction removes more contaminants than any other carpet cleaning method, period.

Cleaning solution is sprayed under pressure onto the carpet and is then extracted with a vacuum source.  The dirty solution is collected in a recovery tank and is usually poured into a sanitary waste system. This cleaning system flushes out large amounts of soil and contaminants in carpet.

Our cleaning professionals perform hot water extraction using high-power, industrial machines. We’ll start with an inspection of the area, pre-treat stains, apply an enzymatic solution, rinse the carpet clean with hot water, and use our high-powered vacuum to remove nearly all of the water. Within 1-2 hours, your carpet will be dry again and ready for use. We’ll leave your carpets completely clean with absolutely no residue.

Hot Water Extraction Recommended by Manufacturers and EPA

Hot Water Extraction is favored by:
  • all major fiber producers (DuPont, Monsanto and Allied Signal),
  • carpet manufacturers (Shaw, Mohawk, World and Queen),
  • the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

Most higher quality carpets that have extended appearance and texture retention warranties require this type of cleaning every 12 months to 18 months in order to retain the warranty coverage.

Hot Water Extraction is NOT Steam Cleaning

For a carpet to be steam cleaned, it must actually use steam. The water must be boiled so that it can transform into a gas. Therefore, the temperature has to be over 212 degrees Fahrenheit (the boiling point for water). Steam cleaning can actually set stains permanently. Steam cleaning may be used with synthetic carpet, and some people believe the higher level of heat will improve the cleanliness of their carpet.

Hot water extraction, on the other hand, only requires hot water. How hot? Hot enough that it cleans deeply and effectively, but not so hot that it sets stains, causes shrinkage or damages fibers.

Not all Hot Water Extraction machines are equal

Truck Mounted Units (what Guaranteed Carpet Services uses).  These machines have large independent engines or run off the motor of the cleaning van.  They can develop up to 1,000 pounds of pressure (though normally carpet is cleaned at only 500 pounds of pressure). They also heat the water to 180 or more degrees and have very powerful vacuums.  These machines are expensive but they can leave the carpets drier in many cases when used properly.  Typically, this type of hot water extraction machine gives the best results if the operator has excellent training and does the job properly.

Professional Portables.  These machines are many times more powerful than residential units.  The number and size of vacuum motors and pumps plus heat exchangers differentiates one from another in terms of performance.  The most powerful machines may have two power cords to enable household circuits to cope. A really good job can be done by a trained professional with these units.  Sometimes portables are the only way the carpets in certain locations can be cleaned.

Residential/Rental.  These machines are fine for spills and maintenance of lightly soiled traffic areas. But they lack the power needed to do the deep cleaning required to get out the grit that lies deep in your carpet pile and to maintain carpet manufacturer warranties.

Homeowners should be careful about renting or buying products like extractors and steamers to use at home. Inexperience and subpar equipment could lead to detergent residue, while inadequate ventilation could cause mold growth.
