George Washington Supported Gadsby's Tavern
in the 18th Century
& Again in the 21st
You Can, Too

In the 18th century, George Washington was a frequent patron of Alexandria's City Tavern. His patronage helped Mr. Gadsby build the national reputation of the elegant new establishment.
Once again, POTUS #1 has helped Gadsby's Tavern, this time in the form of an antique ivory miniature portrait that was auctioned by the Potomack Company in their November  sale to provide funding for the Museum's Endowment Campaign.  A very generous donor gave GTMS a tiny (3''x4") family heirloom to help us maintain the Museum into the next century.  The  early 19th century miniature (blown up to poster size in the picture above) sold for nearly $5,000! Many GTMS members and friends made smaller but much appreciated donations as part of a virtual event celebrating the donation and initiating the Endowment Campaign's fund-raising efforts.
You, too, can assist the Endowment Campaign and join Mr. Washington
with a gift of any size through the

Docent, Board Member, Benefactor

Kathy Kelly was a docent at Gadsby's Tavern Museum for over 40 years.

She was a Life Member of GTMS and served on the GTMS Executive Board for 12 years, many of those years as Treasurer.

Always an enthusiastic participant in Gadsby events, she has become a significant benefactor.  See more about Kathy and how GTMS is honoring her memory.

The GTMS 2021 Calendar celebrates Old Town Alexandria and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society’s place in it. Pictures accompanying each month highlight GTMS activities or interesting sites in Old Town and include tidbits of information about each. As a handy enhancement to the calendar, a page inside the back cover offers a Walking Tour of the sites around Old Town. More information

Calendars are now available for $10 at the gift shops of the Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum.
