PROJECT LINUS — GREATER TWIN CITIES AREA CHAPTER WHAT IS PROJECT LINUS? On Christmas Eve in 1995, an article titled "Joy to the World" appeared in Parade Magazine (www.projectlinus.org/laura.html). It was written by Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, Eddie Adams.
Part of the article featured a three-year old girl who was going through intensive chemotherapy, whose security blanket helped her get through the treatments.
After reading the article, Karen Loucks of Parker, Colorado, decided to provide handmade blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center, and PROJECT LINUS was born.
Since then, Project Linus has expanded to include provision of blankets to children who are seriously ill or traumatized in many ways. There are 308 chapters throughout the United States, which have provided over 5.5 million blankets to children since 1995.
Project Linus also has a mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups (adults AND kids) in local communities, for the benefit of local children.
PROJECT LINUS — Greater Twin Cities Area Chapter Our chapter provides handmade blankets to children — from infants to teens — through charities and hospitals in and around the Greater Twin Cities area of Minnesota as well as directly to children who have suffered a tragic loss. Between July 2006 and February 2017, the GTCA Chapter has provided handmade blankets to almost 50,000 children. That's a lot of BLANKET HUGS!Our chapter collects blankets from volunteers who drop them off at one of our drop-off sites. Once we receive blankets, they are inspected at our Club Linus working meetings to make sure they meet the Project Linus blanket specifications; they are labeled and then packed in large plastic bags for delivery. One of our volunteers then delivers the blankets to one of the many area hospitals, shelters, and social service agencies that we assist. |
