Introduction to Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where the body cannot produce any or enough insulin, causing  high blood sugar levels.
Insulin converts sugar and other food into energy.

Type 1
  • The pancreas does not produce insulin
  • Less prevalent type of diabetes (less than 5% of people with diabetes have type 1)
  • In the past, type 1 was known as juvenile diabetes
  • Usually daily injections of insulin are needed

Type 2
  • Either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or the body cannot use insulin (insulin resistance)
  • Also called hyperglycemia
  • The most common type of diabetes
  • Blood glucose testing and medication are usually needed
