The Food Forest Farm in Groot Marico is where it all begins on a farm that started eight years ago with swales and a dam. The swales and the zone one gardens all are flood irrigated and have been planted up with fruit and nut trees which are about to become fruitful. There is a communal area under where we will have our training classroom. The communal areas include kitchen entertainment area with a cob oven and hammock's, outdoor solar shower, compost toilet and simple wooden cabins for trainees and volunteers. The farm is off the grid and runs on solar with a borehole to supply fresh water for the kitchen and bathroom.

Phase one
Step one -
To get the farm into production we need to develop the shed which is currently a supported roof. This shed frame needs walls and a mezzanine floor for storage of materials and animal feed. In this shed, we will start the chicks in a secure, warm and safe environment for the first few weeks. Then when the chicks become pullets they graduate to the next stage where they will forage and scratch to their heart's content and finally when they become chickens they will be foraging with the sheep in the food forest.

Step two -
To get the tunnel and shade net up in a position to produce micro greens and baby leaf crops for restaurants in Gauteng and Tshwane where they are most in-demand.

Step three -
Then the solar netting camps get set up and prepared with shade netting and water troughs for comfort and security for the sheep and chickens to forage in the food forest.

Step four -
Get started with AgriSETA accredited training courses which we will run various week long courses and a year-long course for emerging farmers. The best learners will be awarded an opportunity to join our producers' network. We will be teaching low-cost farm development for farming dry land, tunnel, shade net, nursery, market garden, free-range chicken and sheep farming.

Step five -
Develop the market garden to produce fresh veggies for our existing client base as well as local restaurants and guesthouses. Currently, there is only a bed or two in that area being watered with flood irrigation but we will set it up with drip irrigation as that is a more conservative way to water.

These elements are part of the training for the emerging farmers so they grow as they learn. By the end of the second year, we will have recouped the investment capital and we will have graduates in our network producing for our ever-increasing market demand which will bring in extra cash flow as we distribute their produce.

Phase two
Natural buildings for guests
With the profits from year-one after dividends are paid-out, we will start development of the low-cost cottages for agri-tourists and retreat guests who wish to get away and enjoy the farm fresh experience.

Coaching and mentoring
The rising stars in our network of emerging farmers will be assisted as much as possible to ensure their success is part of our success.

Expansion Plan
There is land next door that is currently not being used which when we expand onto we can at least double our farms' production and accommodation potential. But the long-term expansion plan is through our network of farmers that we will be developing, We have good connections to grow this into something really special.
