side-tied granny square vest

a classic example of 70s crochet fashion.  this pattern is great for whatever yarn odds and ends you have laying around.  from McCall's Stitchery, Motifs in Crochet, Vol. III, 1972.
this pattern uses worsted weight yarn and a size H hook.  use a J hook for a medium size vest.
SIZE:  Directions for small size (6-8-10). Any changes for medium (12-14) are in parentheses. Directions are the same for both sizes; only the hook size and gauge are different.
GAUGE:  Each motif = 4" (4-1/2") square.

VEST: MOTIFS (make 57): With first color, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 3; join with sl st in top of first ch 3; end off.
Rnd 2: Join 2nd color in any ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next sp) 3 times; join; end off.
Rnd 3: Join 3rd color in any corner ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, (3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups; 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp) 3 times, 3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups; join; end off. Check gauge; motifs should measure 4" (4-1/2") square.

HALF MOTIF (make 2): With any desired color, ch 3, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Row 1: Ch 5,  3 dc in ring, ch  3, 3 dc in ring, ch 3, dc in ring; end off; do not turn.
Row 2: Join 2nd color in 2nd ch of ch 5 at beg of row, ch 5, 3 dc in same sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp (3 dc, ch 3, dc) in next sp; end off; do not turn.
Row 3: Join 3rd color in 2nd ch of ch 5 at beg of row, ch 5, 3 dc in same sp, 3 dc in next sp, corner of 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next sp, (3 dc, ch 3, dc) in next sp. End off.

JOINING: Arrange motifs and half motifs as shown on diagram. From wrong side, with colors matching one side, keeping seams elastic, sew motifs tog through top lps only.

FINISHING: Run in yarn ends on wrong side. Sew A to B edge for shoulders.

EDGING: Row 1: From right side, join green or any desired color in first sp at upper edge of right front side slit, sc in same sp, * ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc, repeat from * around, working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each lower corner ch-3 sp, end upper edge of left front slit. End off. Join same color in upper edge of left back slit, work same edging around slits and lower edge of back, end upper edge of right back slit. End off. Work same edging around each armhole; join with a sl st in first sc. End off.
Row 2: With purple or any desired color, sc in first sc at upper edge of right front slit, sc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, working sc, ch 1, sc in each corner ch-1 sp, end upper edge of left front side slit, sc in last sc. End off. Work same edging around back side slits and' lower edge; end off. Work same edging around armholes; join; end off.
Row 3: With green, work same as row 2. Tack edge of border on upper front motif at slit over back border.

TIES (make 4): With green, ch 18" long. End off. With purple, sc in each ch. End off. Tack two ties to each front as pictured; tie ends. Steam lightly.
