Chewing Tar brings together twelve artists working with materials typically
manufactured for non-art purposes. Included are tar paper, inner tubes, hardware cloth, wood shims, welded metal, plexiglass, aluminum roofing tar, spray paint, 3D printing, and fused plaster.

These artists come to their materials differently. Some find that the material inspires the art. There is an irresistible attraction in shiny tar, shimmering aluminum, the sound of metal on metal, and thick, black paper. For others, when a preconceived idea can’t be executed using traditional art supplies, non-traditional materials are sought out. In either case the industrial materials’ intended use is discarded
in favor of its visual potential.

The artists’ choices, humble or hi-tech, are presented for re-consideration. There is an element of surprise as we become aware of the materials’ original raison d’être and its newly elevated and highlighted significance in these handsome, visually textural pieces.

The title Chewing Tar refers to the childhood pastime of chewing on melting, sticky tar found on the side
of the road in the summertime.

Chewing Tar is exhibited concurrently with a solo show by Valeri Larko in the Hampden Gallery
main space and is meant to intentionally harmonize with Larko’s plein air paintings of urban detritus,
abandoned warehouses and industrial ares in the New York City area.
