cheap wind turbine from a ceiling fan

 
          WELL HELLO AGAIN. 
THIS IS A FUN AND EASY PRODJECT THAT DOES NOT COST VERY MUCH AT ALL.
 BELIEVE IT OR NOT ;   PROBABLY UNDER 40.00 U S DOLLARS.
  GOOD ENOUGH TO TRICKLE CHARGE THAT OLD DEEP CYCLE BATTERY FOR THE TROLLING MOTOR DOWN AT THE DOCK. YOU KNOW   WAY DOWN THE HILL WHERE THE EXTENSION CORD WON'T REACH.
 BESIDES THE DOG KEEPS CHEWING ON IT. AND THE LAWN MOWER DIDN'T HELP MATTERS EITHER. 
    BESIDES NOBODY WANTS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND CARY IT
ALL THE WAY UP THE HILL TO CHARGE IT.
  NOT WHEN THERE IS ALOT OF BAIT AND TACKLE AND POLES, OH YA AN A LOT OF BIG WHOPPER FISH THAT YOU'D RATHER CARRY AT THE TIME.
   THEN YOU HAVE TO CARRY IT BACK DOWN THE HILL AND HOOK IT BACK UP (IF YOU REMEMBERED TO CHARGE IT AFTER YOU GOT ALL THOSE FISH UP THE HILL. AND OF COURSE YOU WOULD STILL HAVE TO MAKE A SECOND TRIP UP AND DOWN THE HILL TO GET THE FISHING GEAR. 
     I THINK BUILDING THIS PROJECT IS A LOT LESS TROUBLE AND A LOT MORE FUN.
 THINK ABOUT IT  GRAB YOUR GEAR WALK DOWN THE HILL, GET IN THE BOAT AND GO FISHING.    COME BACK    HOOK THE CLIPS,  CARRY YOUR FISH N GEAR UP THE HILL AND START SKINNIN AN GUTTIN,
WHOOPEE.
ENOUGH SAID.   AND WHO EVER  RAN AN EXTENSION CORD UP TO THE OLD DEER BLIND.   IMAGINE THAT.
UH "SORRY BABY MY CELL PHONE DIED BECAUSE I FORGOT TO CHARGE IT. WHAT DID YOU NAME HIM?"     "OH YA ...  HER."!!    "OOOOPS!"
AND SHE SAID"@#!!%$!!@*&^%**!!!". ECT.
DEFINITLY    ENOUGH SAID.
 
WELL ENOUGH SAID ON THAT, WHEN YOU BUILD THIS ONE YOU MIGHT WANT TO BUILD A FEW MORE TO SELL TO YOUR FRIENDS SO THEY TO CAN KEEP THIER LEGS, BACKS, HEALTH,  EXTENSION CORDS
AND THIER WIVES.  BESIDES DOG HOUSES ARE CRAMPED AND COLD IN THE WINTER AND NOT TO MENTION DOWN RIGHT UNCOMFORTABLE,
AND THE FLEA AND TICK BATH AFTERWARDS, YOUR FRIENDS WILL NEVER STOP LAUGHING YOU DOWN FOR THE PERFUMEY SMELL.
 
ON   TO   THE   PROJECT
 KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR ONE OF THOSE FREE CEILING FANS PEOPLE KEEP LEAVING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. OR YOU CAN BREAK DOWN AND BUY ONE WITH BENT BLADES OR SOMETHING AT ONE OF THOSE GARAGE SALES.  I PREFER TO GET MINE FREE.
 ITS CHEAPER THAT WAY.
 
THIS PART YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO OUTSIDE OR IN YOUR SHOP, SHED, OR GARAGE. ITS PRETTY DUSTY AND DIRTY.
 
UNSRCEW EVERY SCREW NUT AND BOLT YOU YOU CAN FIND.
SAVE THE ONES THAT GO TO THE BLADES.  AND THE ONES THAT HOLD THE MOTOR ITSELF TOGETHER.
YOU CAN THROUGH THE BLADES AWAY.
AS A MATTER OF FACT, YOU CAN THROW AWAY THE LIGHT BULBS,
THE LIGHT FIXTIRES, THE SWITCHES THE WIRE NUTS,
  THE OUTER DUST COVERING THAT MAKES THE MOTOR LOOK NICE AND BIG LIKE YOU REALY GOT SOMETHING FOR YOUR MONEY,
  THE MOUNT, THE MOUNT COVER, AND ALL OF THE PRETTY DRESSINGS.   (UNLESS YOU PREFER TO SAVE ANY OF IT.)
 I JUST KEEP THE LIGHT BULBS AND NUTS AND BOLTS.
 
NOW ALL YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT IS THE MOTOR WITH A BUNCH OF WIRES HANGING OUT OF BOTH ENDS OF THE CENTER PIPE.
NOTE ONE END OF THE PIPE HAS MORE WIRES STICKING OUT THAN THE OTHER END.
THATS THE END THAT MOUNTED TO THE CEILING OPPOSITE THE FAN BLADE HOLES
.
NOTE THE COLORS OF THE WIRES.
FIND OUT WHICH ONES GO ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH.
CAREFULLY ONE BY ONE  PULL OUT (ONLY) THE ONES THAT GO ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH. PULL FROM THE MOUNTED END (THE END WITH MORE WIRES) .
BE CAREFULL NOT TO PULL ON THE ONES THAT GO TO THE MOTOR WINDINGS. THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT DONT GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
 
IF YOU HAVENT TAKEN OUT THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE MOTOR TOGETHER, THEN NOW IS A GOOD TIME.
     SEPERATE THE TWO HALVES OF THE MOTOR HOUSING OR HULL
EVENLY BY PRYING THEN A LITTLE AT A TIME.
  AFTER YOU HAVE SEPERATED THE TWO HALVES COMLPETELY,
HANDLE THE INSIDES WITH MUCH CARE.
  YOU DONT WANT TO BREAK ANY OF THE SMALL WIRES INSIDE.
 
ISNT THAT GREAT?!  YOU DONT HAVE TO REWIND YHE STATOR.
 
GET OUT THE OHM METER
AND A PIECE OF PAPER AND PEN/PENCIL
THIS IS REALLY EASYER THAN YOU THINK ITS GOING TO BE.
TRUST ME.
SET THE METER TO THE LOWEST OHMS SETTING.
ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PAPER:
LIST THE WIRE COLORS IN ANY ORDER
 
YOU SHOULD ONLY HAXE ABOUT SIX AT THE MOST.
YOU WILL ONLY USE 4.
AND ON SINGLE SPEED FANS, JUST 2.
NOW CLIP THE NEGATIV OR THE POSATIVE TEST LEAD TO THE FIRST COLOR WIRE ON YOUR LIST.
LET GO OF THAT CONNECTION OR YOU WILL GET FALSE READINGS.
NOW THE EASY PART
SEPARATE THE REST OF THE WIRES SO THAT NONE OF THEM TOUCH EACH OTHER.   (THAT WOULD ALSO GIVE FALSE READINGS)
NOW  TOUCH EACH OF THE REST OF THE WIRES ONE AT A TIME  WITH THE OTHER TEST LEAD.
LOOK FOR THE HIGHEST READIN AND WRITE THAT READING DOWN NEXT TO THE FIRST COLOR ON YOUR LIST. AND ALSO WRITE DOWN THE COLOR OF THE WIRE THAT GAVE THAT READING
ONCE YOU ARE DONE WITH THE FIRST WIRE YOU CAN MOVE IT OUT OF THE WAY. YOUR DONE WITH IT.
      DO THE SAME WITH THE THE OTHER WIRES ON YOUR LIST.

 MY CHART LOOKS SOMETHING THIS.
IN THIS CHART I USED LETTERS INSTEAD OF COLORS SO AS NOT TO CONFUSE ANYONE.
NOTICE ON LINE A COLOR A AND C PRODUCED 64 OHMS BETWEEN THEM.
AND ON LINE D COLORS D AND  F  HAD 62 OHMS BETWEEN THEM
SO   A  AND C  ARE A PAIR THAT WE WILL USE.
AND  D AND F   ARE THE OTHER PAIR THAT WE WILL USE.
 PAIR THESE OFF TO KEEP THEM SEPERATE FROM THE OTHERS.
 
CUT OFF THE 2 UNUSED WIRES AND INSULATE THE TIPS WITH SOME EPOXEY OR LIQUID TAPE.
 
     NOW THAT THE HARD PART IS DONE,
WE HAVE ONE SMALL ADDAPTATION TO DO TO THE WIRING
THE WIRES ARE STICKING OUT OF THE WRONG END OF THE PIPE.
 
HOLDING DOWN THE WIRES WITH YOUR LEFT THUMB;
CAREFULLY , ONE BY ONE, PULL EACH OF THE WIRES OUT OF THE
HOLE ON THE SIDE OF THE PIPE.
THEN REDIRECT THEM THROUGH THE SIDE HOLE AND OUT THE
OTHER END OF THE CENTER PIPE.
 
THE WIRING IS NOW COMPLETE
NOW THE NEXT STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT.
WE MUST EPOXY ALL OF THE WIRES DOWN FLAT TO THE METAL OF THE STATOR OR THEY RUN A BIG RISK OF BEING RIPPED OR RUBBED TILL THEY SHORT OUT. PLEASE DO NT SKIP THIS STEP.
ALSO EPOXY THE WIRES TO THE CENTER PIPE WHERE THEY ENTER
INTO THE SIDE HOLE TO GIVE THEM STABILITY. AND TO KEEP THEM FROM BEING PULLED OUT OF THE UNIT.
 
**CONGRATULATIONS**
YOU MAY NOW LAY THIS COMPLETED STATOR DOWN IN A SAFE PLACE
SOMEWHERE TO THE SIDE.

NOW FOR THE NEXT AND LESS BRAIN WRACKING FEAT:
**MAGNETICS AND ALERNATOR ASSEMBLY**
 
YOU HAVE 2 HALVES OF THE MOTOR HOUSING.
THEY HAVE BEARINGS THAT NEED TO BE CLEANED AND REGREASED.
AND IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO CLEAN UP THE WHOLE HOUSING WHILE YOU ARE AT IT.
I USE BRAKE PARTS CLEANER AND ROTATE THE BEARINGS WHILE SPRAYING TO RELEASE ALL OF THE DUST AND GRIT TRAPPED INSIDE.
YOU MAY USE LITHIUM GREASE OR BEARING GREASE OR EVEN A HIGH WEIGHT MOTOR OIL IN A PINCH.
YOU DONT WANT THE INSIDE OF YOUR ALTERNATOR OILY.
OIL DOES NOT DISSIPATE HEAT, AND IT WILL SOMETIMES GET UNDER THE EPOXY AND WILL RELEASE IT.
 
AFTER ALL IS DONE TAKE THE HALF HOUSING THAT THE BLADES WERE ATTATCHED TO AND SLIP IT ONTO THE STATORS CENTER PIPE.
THIS WILL GO ONTO THE END THAT DOES NOT HAVE WIRES PROTRUDING.
 
COUNT YOUR COILS ON THE OUTER PART OF THE STATOR.
MULTIPLY BY 2. THIS IS THE NUMBER OF MAGNET ( POSITIONS ) THAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS WORK PROPERLY. THEN YOU WILL NEED TO SHOP FOR MAGNETS.
NOW THIS CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING, SEEING THAT THESE MAGNETS TAKE THE PLACE OF THE INDUCTION RING AND ALL OF THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF CEILING FANS MOTORS USE A DIFFERENT INDUCTION RINGS.
DIFFERENT THICKNESSES ARE THE MAIN PROBLEM.
BUT NOT THAT MUCH OF A PROBLEM IF YOU MEASURE THE DISTANCE
BETWEEN THE STATOR AND THE MOTOR/ ALTERNATORS HOUSING.
(NOTE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING TO FILL THAT GAP BETWEEN THE
INSIDE OF THE HOUSING AND ALMOST TO THE STATOR WITHOUT TOUCHING THE STATOR. )
THUS AN AIR GAP OF AS SMALL AS YOU CAN GET IT.
FIRST FIGURE OUT THE WIDTH OF YOUR MAGNETS SO THAT THEY CAN FILL THE INSIDE PART OF YOUR OUTER HOUSING WITH OUT TOUCHING EACH OTHER, AND THEN THE THICKNESS OF YOUR GAP MINUS AROUND AN EIGHT INCH GAP.
THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE EXACT.
THE SMALLER THE AIR GAP THE BETTER UNLESS THE MAGNETS RUB THE STATOR.   NOT GOOD.

OR THE HARD WAY LIKE I DID BECAUSE I WAS IM PATIENT:
A TRIP TO THE ARTS AND CRAFTS DEPT OF WALL MART.
THEY ONLY HAVE ONE SIZE THAT I HAVE FOUND,
 HALF INCH (1.27cm) x 12.7mm. YOU GET FOUR FOR 3.58 US$.
SO INSTEAD OF GETTING THE RIGHT MAGNETS, I JUST STACKED THEM TILL I GOT THE RIGHT THICKNESS AND SUPERGLUED THEM DOWN.
