Organic farming and gardening is one of the most important actions to take to ensure a healthy planet. By purchasing organics and practicing organic methods we keep highly toxic pesticides out of our air, water and soil. Pesticides are used in organics, however the use is strictly regulated as to what can be used and when they can be applied. These regulations ensure that the workers on the farms, thecreatures and insects that live there and our air and water do not suffer the irreparable harm that occurs when more toxic pesticides are used. According to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), "Among the estimated two million agricultural workers in the United States, physicians diagnose 10,000 to 20,000 pesticide poisonings each year.1" This statistic is most like under reporting the poisonings as many workers do not report their injuries and in fact any exposure to these toxins should be considered as a poisoning.
Organic Versus Conventional
Don't be conventional, be rational.
Here is a definition of conventional:
Conventional farming is unsustainable and simply a way to increase profits at the expense of destroying our environment. It uses highly toxic pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically engineered organisms. There are numerous studies that show that conventional farming DOES NOT: increase yields; reduce the amount of pesticides used; increase nutritional content; or increase diversity. It is all about mono cropping and death.
In the 1970s farmers came together in an unprecedented move and decided to self regulate themselves to ensure that we, the consumers, would have access to safe high quality food. You can read the history of the organic movement here - http://www.omorganics.org/page.php?=82
Organics is a growing industry. These days many corporations are taking up the practice and offering organic options. While overall this may seem like a good trend these companies need to completely stop their massive poisoning of the Earth. Yes, it may mean less profits, but they really shouldn't be making such huge profits off or our food supply anyway. Especially when these profits are based on destructive practices.
You can make a difference. Buy organic. Even when it comes to body care, cleaning supplies and clothes. Every time you make a purchase of organic products you are voting with your money and sending a message that we will no longer buy into practices that poison our planet.
