Higher Education Sustainability Act (HESA)

HESA was passed by Congress as part of the broader Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HR 4137) and signed into law on August 14.  The act authorizes $50 million in competitive grants to institutions of higher education (including community colleges) to help fund academic programs relating to sustainability, renewable energy, toxics management, and other environmental areas.  The funding was not appropriated during the 2008 session of Congress, but there will be a push next year to pass the appropriation.

A briefing by James Elder, Director of the Campaign for Environmental Literacy is attached below as a pdf document.
