Posted on 06/12/2015:

We are pleased to announce that we passed our final county inspection and will have our Usage and Occupancy (U&O) soon. An appointment with the city for our annual inspection has been scheduled.

Within the last couple of weeks this is what happened:
1. Final Mechanical (the County required an additional roof inspection), which we passed and received
2. Closure on Final Mechanical required us to go to the County offices to present evidence of #1.
3. Final Inspection for 'Renovation Permit' (last of four County permits)

To do:
1. Application for 'Use and Occupancy' is planned for 6/10 or 6/11.
2. Schedule City of Greenbelt Final inspection
3. Inside the club (U&O) does not require these items:
    a. mount mirrors in restrooms, sit and enjoy cup of coffee and fellowship,
    b. paint floor drain strainer, sit and enjoy second cup of coffee and fellowship,
    c. mount shade on restroom window,
    d. mount paper towel holders, chair rail in near future, shelves
    e. other finishing touches including cleaning.

As always, the GBSC Board continues to ask for your patience and tolerance. Also if the opportunity presents itself please thank all the volunteers who have donated their time, effort, and skills.

So when will the Club open?
Hopefully a realistic date when the club can open will be provided after the next GBSC BOD meeting scheduled for Sunday, 6/14/15.

GBSC BOD meets on the second Sunday of every month at our new location, 143 Centerway and all GBSC members are welcomed to attend these meetings.

Love, Service and Patience,

As promised here is the updated explanation on the progress being made and going forward this summary will be provided following every regularly scheduled GBSC Board of Directors (BOD) meeting.

We are getting quite close to opening the doors for meetings at the GBSC. A major cleanup still needs to be done. (We need volunteers to help clean—please let us know when you can help.) Once we have the club all spic and span and set up per the plans, we will schedule a final inspection from the County for the Use and Occupancy approval. This is huge. Once we clear this hurdle we can start to talk about opening the doors for meetings.

A number of tasks have completed since the last announcement that includes a final painting, connecting the hot water heater and all sinks and toilets are working. Happy to report that the HVAC performs quite well and is nice and quiet. Want to be able to hear the message.

As always, the GBSC Board continues to ask for your patience and tolerance as we reach the home stretch. If the opportunity presents itself please thank all the volunteers who have donated their time, effort, and skills. They are doing all this work in their free time. Please keep them in your prayers that they may continue to complete the final remaining tasks without incident or delay.

Again, it is not a matter of if the club will open it is a matter of when the club will open. A realistic date will be provided after the next GBSC BOD scheduled for Sunday, 5/10/15.

GBSC BOD meets on the second Sunday of every month at our new location, 143 Centerway and all GBSC members are welcomed to attend these meetings, this month we are meeting at 3:30pm.

Love, Service and Patience,
GBSC BOD

All members and groups: Greenbelt Step Club Status Report-
Currently completing the heating and air conditioning task, the heat pump provision is on schedule as well as dry wall objectives and the installation of cabinets. Yes, it is coming together. The Club has passed its close-in inspection that allows us to finish installing drywall. Volunteers with experience with drywall, taping and/or mudding should contact Michael G. at 240.304.5016 or mgarner973@yahoo.com

On 3/21/2015, at 10am, we are having a ‘clean out the club day’ to remove all the under construction debris and start making room for our meetings. If you are available please bring your energy and brawn to our new location, 143 Centerway Rd.

The GBSC continues to ask for your patience and tolerance and to stay cognizant to the fact that we are reliant on the craftsman in our community who continue to volunteer their specialized trades. They are doing all this work in their spare time. Please keep them in your prayers that they may continue to complete the above tasks without incident or delay.

Again, it is not a matter of if the club will open it is a matter of when the club will open. A firmer/realistic date will be provided after the next GBSC Board of Directors (BOD) meeting scheduled for Sunday, 4/11/15.

GBSC BOD meets on the second Sunday of every month at our new location and all GBSC members are welcomed to attend these meetings, 4:30pm start time.     Love & Service-

The story of the Greenbelt Step Club (GBSC) relocation.
In the spring of 2013, GBSC lost its lease and needed to find a new home. GBSC signed a lease for the space at 143 Centerway and proceeded to fix up the space in May.

The board believed that any updates to the new space would be cosmetic in nature and that the existing washroom was operational.   During construction we found out that more extensive work was needed.   Fortunately, skilled professionals and willing volunteers helped us out and we continued to fix up the space until the City of Greenbelt posted a STOP WORK order.

July 2013 to February 2014 was filled with activity related to obtaining permits from Prince George’s County and the City of Greenbelt.  An architect and other skilled professionals helped us through the process of preparing, presenting and revising a set of detailed plans that are required by the county for approval of a permit.  Because each of the professionals working on this project has been a volunteer, the Club has saved a lot of money, but sometimes coordinating the work has been time-consuming.  Persistence paid off and a county permit was issued in November 2013.

The County requirements that have most impact deal with fire safety and efforts to make the space comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  GBSC must do all construction with non-volatile materials and the refurbished space will be equipped with a chair-lift and a handicapped accessible wash room.

GBSC is grateful that our landlord for the new location has agreed not collect rent until all our work on 143 Centerway is finished.

Through the generosity and concern of the many people who see the benefits of the GBSC the Board is confident that the Step Club should reopen in the near future and resume its place in the Greenbelt community.  For this development we are very grateful.

Recent Progress

T
he Greenbelt Step Club is in the process of relocating to 143 Centerway Road (basement), Roosevelt Center, Greenbelt, Md. 20770. Meetings will resume after the relocation is complete.

The Board of the Greenbelt Step Club has learned a lot since the relocation process began in May 2013. We have learned through our own experience and from our architect that we can’t predict the date that the Club will reopen. At this time we can’t realistically set a target date.

The Greenbelt Step Club will open after:
· Our plans are reviewed and stamped by licensed engineers,
· Prince George’s county approves our permit application,
· The City of Greenbelt approves our permit application,
and
· All the work described in the approved plans is completed to the satisfaction of both the County and City.

We are committed to continuing the Greenbelt Step Club, and we intend to open for meetings at 143 Centerway Rd. We have made a lot of progress, and have been lucky/blessed: As new challenges arise, both skilled professionals and willing volunteers have helped us out and continue to do so. None of our efforts have been wasted.
We will post our progress as we make it.

In Love and Service-

The Greenbelt Step Club Board of Directors
Sheila, Michael, Jenny, Ginny, Catherine, Jim and Toni

Posting date 7/22 -- On July 16th we met with the City of Greenbelt, and on July 18th we met with PG County to review out permit application for Use and Occupancy (with Construction). Our space at 143 Centerway was favorably viewed for the most part, but drawing revisions are required, and The County is largely sure that a sprinkler is required.
With design and permit reapplication, we (The Board and the Building Committee) anticipate opening on or about October 15th.
Drafting will begin tomorrow, by one of our most regular and able members. Additional drafting and plotting assistance may be helpful, so please forward any recruits. We are required to have a Professional Engineer 'stamp and seal' our mechanical and electrical drawings, and it appears that we have a friendly engineer to do so. This engineer will also assist with drawing development on our rudimentary documents. The County requires a one-hour fire rated wall protecting the entrance stair [simple construction with gyp board], but entails coordination with the theater side of the wall, probably.
Today, a local sprinkler company measured and assessed our space. An estimate and guide on system requirements will be coming. Also today, we met with WSSC to discuss water service to our space. We have a temporary hookup now from a neighbor tenant. But, our needs (e.g.sprinkler system) indicate that we will need to manage our own water source.
Permit re-submittal is planned for the week of August 5th. Obtaining our permit gives WSSC the ability to make a decision on our space, and permits the City of Greenbelt to review the stair and other aspects of our space.
We are moving forward, staying in the solution. Nothing happens in God's world by accident.
Thank you all for your prayers. They are felt.

Opening of the Greenbelt Step Club will not be July 1, but is moved out to August 1. Good news is that some heavy work is progressing steadily toward completion, including the addition of one restroom. The original restroom has been completely demolished and is being rebuilt, as its condition was not as good as originally thought. End result will provide better service to members and attendees.

Offering Twelve-Step Services Since 1990
The Greenbelt Step Club, Inc., located in the heart of Historic Greenbelt, Maryland, which the U.S. Department of Interior designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1997, has continuously offered twelve-step meetings and helped thousands in their quest for a path of recovery since 1990.  From its beginning, the Club has been available to any approved twelve-step group interested in offering meetings to people recovering from alcoholism, drug addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems.

Presently, the Club offers some forty twelve-step meetings per week, representing Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Adult Children Anonymous (ACA), Chemically Dependent Anonymous (CDA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).  Click Twelve-Step Fellowships in the website's menu in the left column to learn about these fellowships.  To see which meetings are held daily at the Club, click Find a Meeting in the menu.

The twelve-step fellowships represented at the Club operate autonomously and independently of Club influence except the Club is “landlord” of the meeting premises and provider of the services.  The Club does not speak for nor represent the twelve-step groups, nor does it participate in AA General Service Office activities.  A Fellowship Steering Committee composed of representatives of the Club’s twelve-step groups provides oversight responsibility to ensure the various groups’ autonomy, to assist individual meeting groups as necessary, and to deal with the Club’s Board of Directors on matters pertaining to the groups.

Official membership in the Club is not required to attend the meetings or to participate in the Club’s social activities.  However, membership is encouraged as it entitles a person to vote in elections and to have a say-so in policy matters affecting the Club.  Click To Join the Club in the menu if you are interested in becoming a Club member.

We hope you will browse the website to learn more about the Club and consider attending our meetings and participating in other Club activities.

Our Purpose

1. To provide a meeting facility to approved twelve-step fellowships that help people recover from alcoholism, drug addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems.

2. To provide a welcoming environment for people seeking recovery  through the twelve-step fellowships.
