Scott Gold, reporter for the LA Times, first started the "Out There" series last year in the now minimized "California" Section where one of his stories was about USC's Center for Sustainable Cities' work researching the idea of greening LA's alleys last fall. He's also written about the violence and day to day happenings in the neighborhoods just south of downtown. He is currently writing stories over the next year and a half about South LA. This website has riveting pictures and audio slide shows of this area's struggles with a newly imposed gang injunction on the 38th Street gang and other effects of generational poverty. The link to the map also shows some interesting demographic data for the area.
As the alleys, in their current state, may currently contribute to these problems, conversely, these greened alleys may help create the conditions for a healthier and safer community.
