Places: Pentwater, Michigan

In August 2007 we stayed at the Snug Harbor Marina in Pentwater during their Homecoming Weekend. The weather was beautiful, the town was crowded, and we got a good view of it all as we were tied up right on the sidewalk by their gas dock.

We arrived in Pentwater on a beautiful Friday afternoon. The water out on Lake Michigan was as nice as you'll ever see it, and the beach by the breakwater, which is part of Charles Mears State Park, was extremely crowded. There was definitely a feeling of excitement as we entered the harbor, knowing we were about to make port in a new town we'd never experienced before.

Pentwater didn't disappoint us at all. It's a picturesque little town and their Homecoming festivities are lots of fun. Our first night there, we attended an open-air concert in the Village Green where the Petoskey High School Steel Drum Band performed.

There was also a parade along main street, and the Coast Guard performed a demonstration air-sea rescue out on Pentwater Lake. The demonstation was only about 100 yards from Meridian, so we had one of the best views in town. We also had a great view of the fireworks at night.

While in Pentwater, we untied our bicycles from the deck of Meridian and took a ride down to the Silver Lake Dunes area. Silver Lake is an interesting area because of all the dune buggies that you see. They look like something out of an old Mad Max movie. That was a fun and scenic ride - although a bit strenuous on the way back due to a poor route choice on our part. We wrote a blog entry about that.

We left Pentwater on Monday morning and the weather was just as nice as when we arrived. Our next stop was Manistee.

Thumbs up:

Snug Harbor Marina, while a bit pricey, has very nice facilities and places you in a great location that's accessible to everything in town. Also, we needed the services of their marine mechanic and found him to be top-notch.

We enjoyed ice cream at House of Flavors and found Cenzos to be a very good place for groceries - lots of local produce and Michigan wines.
