Places: Muskegon, Michigan

We spent one night in Muskegon during our cruise up the coast in 2007. We stayed at Hartshorn Marina and enjoyed our night there, never even leaving the marina grounds. The marina was staffed with friendly and helpful folks, and the boaters who were around were outgoing and friendly as well. The marina, while somewhat basic, had a bit of character. As you can see from the photos, you can drive your car right up to your slip and you have your own picnic table.

The marina is located near Heritage Landing in Muskegon where they hold open air concerts in the summer. While in our slip, we were able to relax on our aft deck to the sounds of (free) live music.

The next morning had patchy fog but it was already beginning to lift as we made our way out the harbor, through Muskegon Lake, and onto Lake Michigan. Our next stop was Pentwater, Michigan.

Thumbs up:

We stayed at Hartshorn Marina. We wouldn't characterize it as a "destination" marina unless you plan to attend festivities at Heritage Landing.  But it's great for overnighting and has a certain quirky charm we haven't often seen on Lake Michigan.
