2011

The 3rd annual Golfin' for Grayson tournament was held on Saturday, August 28, 2011.  Not even hurricane Irene could stop us from playing!  The weather held up and so did our golfers.  The day started with breakfast provided by Chick-fil-A and then a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.  We had about 18 teams playing this year.  After lunch, prizes were awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.  Congratulations to all our winners!  Also, a raffle was held for various prizes including race tickets at Bristol and special golf clubs too.  All in all, we raised $1934.75!  This will be funding our "Big Give" to the WSFC schools this 2011-2012 school year.  Thanks to all who participated and volunteered for this event and especially to Kevin Bedard who organized the tournament.  Thank you all again!

On Sunday May 22, 2011, we had the Grayson Foundation Concert  Fundraiser.  Held in the courtyard of  The Factory in downtown Kernersville, it was a beautiful afternoon of music and singing.  Many local artists participated in this event.  We had a great turnout and were able to raise $1926!  The Grayson Foundation would first like to thank Kresha Waldrop and all the other performers for their hard work.  Also, thank you to everyone who came and supported us as well.  Because of your donations, we were able to help a little girl continue with one of her therapies as well as the continued sponsorship of another individual at ICan House in Winston-Salem.  We appreciate your support!

GOLF'IN FOR GRAYSON 2010

Golf 'in for Grayson 2010
Thanks again for another successful Golfin' for Grayson tournament.  We had 72 golfers this year and raised over $2000!  We are still counting and will update later.  Our sponsors were Chick-fil-A and Coca Cola and we are so grateful to each of them.  We were also fortunate to have some awesome gifts donated for our raffles from Drew Bedard and Katie Prevette.  Many thanks to our t-shirt sponsors, hole sponsors, volunteers, and family as well.  This would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Kevin Bedard who put the event together.  We love you Kevin!  We'd also like to thank CP Photo & Video for photographing the event.  Remember to check out your photos on:
Monday the 30th at http://cpphotovideo.photoreflect.com
Check the graysonfoundation.net website for updates on the tournament. We thank everyone for coming and showing their support and hope to see you next year.

UPDATE: $1340.  Dollars have been raised so far in the "Spring 2010 Drive"  We are so excited by all whom have already donated and we are hoping to reach the goal of $2010. We have only $670. to go...

Hello Everyone: The Grayson Foundation is kicking off it's 2010 Spring (20 or10) Drive.  This past year we held a 'Swim to Safety' Program in Kernersville, N.C. to help children with Autism learn the basics of swimming.  We were also thrilled to be able to supply classrooms with educational tools and games for the students.  The foundation has also been able to sponsor a child at a local organization (iCan House) that works on leadership and social skills. We've been able to donate computers to area families and teachers as well.  We look forward to having another successful 'Golf'in for Grayson' event in Winston-Salem, N.C.  Our goal is to raise more funds so we can continue our mission to help those that have Autism, their families, and their educators.  Please consider a donation of $20 or $10 to fund future missions.

Our Goal for this drive is $2010
Thank you for your support, Love the parents of Grayson

Golf' in for Grayson

The Grayson Foundation had its first annual golf tournament, Golfin' for Grayson, on August 15, 2009.  We were excited to host almost 100 golfers at beautiful Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem.  Breakfast and lunch were served to the golfers and staff on what turned out to be a gorgeous day to play.  $2345.00 was the end total raised.  We at Grayson Foundation want to thank our sponsors for this event, Chic-Fil-A of Kernersville and Coca Cola.  Also Irwin Tools and Newell Rubbermaid each provided gift baskets that were raffled off.  A HUGE 'Thank you" goes out to Kevin Bedard who put this event together and continues to work diligently for the foundation.  Along with Kevin, there were many wonderful volunteers without whose help this event would not have been possible.  We love you all and cannot express our gratitude enough.  Lastly, we thank all our golfers!  We sincerely hope you had as much fun as we did and that you'll join us again next year for the second annual Golfin' for Grayson Tournament!

SWIM TO SAFETY

posted Jun 24, 2009, 11:18 AM by Roger Sherrell   [ updated Jun 24, 2009, 12:12 PM ]

On May 5, 2009 we started our first "Swim to Safety" class.  Classes were held at First Christian Family Life Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next 6 weeks.  We had a total of 7 children that attended during that time.  Each child was accompanied by either their parent or another adult during the lessons.  We worked on identifying the safety of the pool by checking for a lifeguard, pointing to the lifeguard, and asking if it was "safe" before getting in.  Once we were in the water, we worked on blowing bubbles with our mouths and then our noses.  From there , it was on to kicking with a kick board, and learning to float on our backs  by sticking our chests up and looking up at the sky.  We learned to "pull the water" back for our front stroke as well.  It was exciting to see any child start to reduce the number of floats on their belts as they grew more confident in their swimming.  Many thanks go to Olinda Branch at FCFLC for allowing us this pool time and also to Patti Murphy for volunteering to teach.  Thanks go to Tricia and Kevin for making our task board and handouts.   We also want to thank each parent that attended with their child and for allowing us this opportunity to work with them.  We are excited about doing more "Swim to Safety" classes in the future to reach even more children with Autism.

"A Beautiful Day"

posted by Janice Sherrell

Yes, this is taken straight from the U2 song. But when the DJ played it last  night, it fit like a glove.

Friends Judy & Kara planned and perfectly executed a picnic/benefit for the Grayson Foundation. The timing was perfect as Grayson would have turned 7 on June 25th. The weather was perfect, if just a bit hot & sticky, the food was just right, the music was great (see Roger Sherrells page for details on the awesome DJ), and the people were incredible. In addition to family, friends and co-workers, there were folks in attendance who didn't personally know Donna & Roger, but did know about Grayson and wanted to be a part of this event. As one woman told me, you can't be a parent and not be terribly affected by this story, whether you know those involved personally or not.

At one point, I was sitting on the back deck and witnessed: a serious game of corn hole being disrupted by Nick & Mahala while they worked in concert with each other to steal the bean bags; groups of people talking and laughing; an occasional '80s era dance move by someone that had us all in stitches; kids running through a sprinkler; a lot of off-key and too loud singing along with songs that showed our age. It was a scene from a Lifetime movie...a moment of perfection. A beautiful day.

But then to consider the reason for this gathering...it's almost too much to bear. That the 1 year anniversary of Graysons death, August 8th, is around the corner and will come too fast. A whole year without my beautiful nephew; of heartbreak for Donna and Roger.

I used to feel conflicted (and still do sometimes) at times when I am happy, laughing and lovin' life while there is tragedy/sadness/despair in the background. That somehow enjoying the good of life when others are suffering is somehow, disrespectful. But I know that God intends for us to have a good life, a full and satisfied life. This, in spite of the bad things. That He will bring good from tragedy, and that embracing the good DOES NOT mean that we are "OK" with the tragedy. Constantly looking forward without forgetting what is behind.

Please go to http://graysonfoundation.net Learn about Grayson, not just about his death, but about his life. Lots of newspaper articles have been written about him, his love for life and for others. Support this cause; support those affected by autism. Donate if you can; consider playing golf this fall when the tournament comes around. But most of all, don't forget.

I miss you so much Grayson.

Kara Murray and Judy Ramey

Our son Grayson always had a great time whenever he went to visit Judy and Kara.  Now,  a whole lot of friends and family can say the same.  What an honor it was for us as his parents to be able to share with others a wonderful time.  This week, on the 25th would have been his 7th birthday and Judy and Kara wanted to do something special in his memory.  A party was thrown with a DJ, games, great food, and an awesome group of people who generously donated to the Grayson Foundation as well. "Thank you" hardly covers the gratitude we feel towards Judy and Kara for this absolutely AWESOME event.  We know Grayson loved you both and we do too!

December - Cash Elementary

Grayson Foundation had the privilege of visiting the AU classes at Cash Elementary on December 17, 2008.  We were there to complete our BIG GIVE to them.  Thanks to all who donated in our pledge drive as we were able to give them the supplies they needed.  I, Donna Sherrell, was honored to speak in front of the 3 classes who had gathered together.  From tissues, wipes, and sanitizers, to batteries, ink cartridges, and a new printer, the list had lots of various things on it.  The teachers were thrilled about everything and we're sure the kids will love the new bouncy balls.  Members of the Behavior Support Team of WS/FC schools, Trisha, Jolanta, and Kevin were there along with the assistant principle of Cash Elementary.  We truly enjoyed giving back to the class that Grayson belonged to.  As a wonderful surprise we received a huge thank you card from all the students of Mrs. Colditz and Mr. Largent.  The students of Ms. Mellert each handed me a thank you card and expressed their gratitude.  It was TERRIFIC!

December - Sedge Garden Elementary

On December 16, 2008, the Grayson Foundation went to Sedge Garden Elementary to visit the classes of Mrs. Eng and Mrs.Ijames.  We found many excited children ready for Christmas and presents too.  We were thrilled to be able to give them a new HP Computer for use in their classrooms.  They got to unwrap the big box and see for themselves the new addition.  A little candy was also given out to the children.  Everyone was very thankful, especially the teachers.  It was a great way to start the day off for all of us!
