Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport and a form of self defense that focuses on grappling and ground fighting.  It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend his or herself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique.

If you avoid the story-tellers and the opinions of Internet Keyboard warriors, any Professional Bouncer or Law Enforcement Officer will attest to the likelihood of a fight ending up on the ground; with all opinions aside, the statistical fact is that most fights end up on the ground. Although it is not (always) in a fighter's best interest to go to the ground in all situations, the chances of being put there (even against your will) are very high. Considering these facts, it would be unwise to ignore ground fighting techniques.
