HEART POEMS

I. THE EVENT

You crumple to the ground

Blind baby helpless

Death puts his arms around you

Where?

Close up or far away

Who finds you who

Helps you who

calls the ambulance?

Your holy face shut

and locked

One hand

open still

fine clothes creased

but where?

Is it pavement stairwell

or backstage at the

monsters’ ball?

Over and over

in dreams that keep me

awake all night

I wasn’t there

I was never

There

II. THE OPERATION

Split open like a fish

You’re on display

Your secret’s out

Now everyone can see

what’s written

on the dark inside

Now your blood sings

in the machine

Calling out for

Grace

Grace will come to you

Grace will be yours

III. RECOVERY

Open your eyes

Grace

in a white dress

Holds your face between

her white gloved hands

So you smile

remembering

You are not dead
