Gotherington is the Cotswolds gateway of choice for many cyclists from Cheltenham, Bishop's Cleeve and Tewkesbury.
The number of cyclists travelling through Gotherington has increased dramatically in recent years and long may the increase continue.

Not only is there an increase in cycling generally in the area, but organised cycling events (sportives and charities) that generate cycling traffic all day on their annual events, all use the Gretton Road specifically as part of their route for hundreds of competitors/entrants.

For example
British Heart Foundation Cotswold Cycle Ride - 15th May
Evans Cycles Cotswold Sportive - 24th July
Wiggle Cotswold Sportive - 21st August

It is not a coincidence that these examples of organised mass participation events use Gotherington and specifically Gretton road for its scenic route.

However, there are dangers for cyclists as the motor traffic through Gotherington has also increased and will increase even further as large numbers of houses are planned for the village. In addition to increased traffic there is another danger for cyclists.

Lioncourt is the developer for Land at Truman's Farm and is proposing to narrow a stretch of Gretton Road at Manor Lane in  to provide a pedestrian footway on the south side of the road from their development to Gotherington. The length of road to be narrowed is between the two red marker on on the Google map below. Vehicles leaving Gotherington and travelling east in the direction of Gretton will have priority.  In addition to the narrowing this proposal of 75 houses will put an extra 128 cars on local roads (assumes 1.7 cars per household).

Gotherington Narrowing

The proposed pedestrian footway is on the left side of this picture and extends from two metres this side of the end of the kerb, past the entrance to 44 Gretton Road and on to Manor Lane. The  footway will be two metres wide. The camera viewpoint is that of  a cyclist entering the road narrowing and facing oncoming traffic that has right of way.
The narrowing has three features that collectively make this a dangerous passage for cyclists.
1. The length of the narrowing which is over 40 metres.
2. The road goes up hill.
3. Limited visibility due to the bend in the road and the brow of the hill.

It will be dangerous for all cyclists, particularly recumbents, those travelling at a leisurely pace and children. It is also likely that motorists will try to squeeze past cyclists in the long narrowing.

The major events mentioned above generally return to Cheltenham through this narrrowing. Many will be weary from their exertions and therefore more at risk at this totally unnecessary narrowing.

If you think the narrowing proposal and an additional 128 vehicles from 75 houses will make cycling dangerous then you should object and make your voice heard. Planning departments, however well-intentioned, don't always appreciate the needs of cyclists and can make stupid decisions.

Objecting

Do not refer to or cut and paste from this site as you risk having your objection rejected.  Do not use this website as evidence and do not be influenced by it when making your decision. Planning law requires that you use only:

Steps

1 Satisfy yourself that there are valid grounds for objecting by looking at the developer's  Transport Statement , paragraphs 4.6 to 4.11. A diagram of the narrowing is shown at figure 4 page 23. The Road Safety Audit is also relevant. You will also want to view the developer's full application .

2. Register at the Tewkesbury Borough website

3. Login and make your comments here

The sooner you make your objection the better as it will encourage other cyclists to object. You can comment on this application up to the day before it goes to committee. We don't know when that will be but it could be 2nd August, 30 August or sometime later. If you objection is very late then it is unlikely to be studied in detail.
