January 22nd and 23rd marked the kick off of the Cycling BC Youth and Junior programs for 2011. Athletes participated in their first of a series of training camps offered to the team throughout the season.
We had a good turn out this weekend with a lot of young riders in the Youth group, as well as some new faces joining the Jr. team for their first year.
I am really excited about the groups we have this year. A lot of the kids have already shown that they really want to improve, and I was impressed with the work ethic and attitude at our first camp. Having worked with some of these athletes for the past 3 years now I have really been able to see improvements as they grow and mature.
The focus for the first camp of the year was mainly on skill development. Working on flat pedals riders practiced skills like jumping, manualing, and tap maunaling to improve their technical and tactical abilities.
I can confidently say I saw noticeable improvement in almost everyone from the start to the finish of just one day. But to me, the biggest sign that this weekend was a success was that by the end of each day the athletes were happy and still excited to ride.
