General Questions: [top]

1. Do I need a Google Account?[top]

Yes and no. If you have an email address that uses Google Apps, then you don't need a Google Account. However, if you just have a normal email address, then yes, you have to get a Google Account.

2. How do I get an account?[top]

All you have to do is goto calendar.google.com and log in with your Google Account.

3. Are there keyboard shortcuts?[top]

Of course. There are lots of keyboard shortcuts that pretty much means you don't need a mouse :) So, here you go: *Note, this is from the official Google Calendar help site.
Also, this table is kinda big, so click here to show/hide the table.

Navigating around a calendar should be fast and easy. For those of you who like to type, we've provided keyboard shortcuts for most of the key functionality.

How To Questions: [top]

1. How do I add an event?[top]

Like many of the things Google offers, there are more than one way to create an event using Google Calendar. Right now, there are five different ways to add an event. Which way you use will depend on what you need it to do. For all of the examples I show here, I am going to add "Work on FAQ" between 1:00PM and 3:00PM on Saturday, January 20th.
I. Click and drag
II. Create Event
III. Quick Add
IV. Homepage Module
V. SMS Message
Click here to see a table I set up to show you what each method can/can not do.

Click and Drag

Find the day of the week you want to add the event to. Click the white box that is at the start time and drag to the box which is the end time. Now, a box like this will appear.

Now, in the text field, enter the description of the event. In my case, I will put Work on FAQ. Now, you have two options, Create Event, or edit event details.

If this is good, and you have no other details for the event, such as reminder, location, invite people, etc., then you want to click Create Event. However, if you do have to add more details, you want to click edit event details.

Create Event

For this method, you want to either click the Create event link

or just type 'c'. Now, your calendar will go away, and you will be able to change anything Google Calendar lets you change about the event from here. Once you are done, click the Save button

and your event will show up on your calendar.

Quick Add

For this method, you want to click the Quick Add link.

This is where you type in all time information about your event (description, time, date). In my case, I will type "Work on FAQ saturday, january 20 from 1pm to 3pm". When you are done, either hit Enter, or click the little plus.

Homepage Module

If you are looking at your Personalized Homepage, and have the Calendar Module

on it, then you can add events straight from there. Here, you have two choices, Create Event and Quick Add. They are they same as if you have your Calendar loaded, so I'm not going to explain that again. The only difference with this is if you click Create Event, a new window/tab will open so you can edit the details, then close once you save it.
SMS Message

This is the method you can use to send a text message to Google and get your event added to your calendar. I believe this is only avalible in the US right now. You follow the same guidelines as with Quick Add, only you send a text message to 48368 (GVENT). After you send the message, you should get a reply saying that the event was added. If this doesn't work, you probably didn't link your phone number to your account. To do that, follow the steps here.
