GMC Newsletter

Dear Gonzaga Moms,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Easter with family and friends and had a much needed rest!  The last month of school will be filled with many activities for all.  Come down and get involved.

There is never a dull moment on Eye Street! The Washington Post did a great article highlighting the service outreach of the students. One of the things we all value about Gonzaga is the transformation of our boys into men for others.  This article highlights the opportunities to aid in this growth.  And as you have all heard by now, Eye Street was visited by a tornado before Easter break. Thankfully, no one was injured. Repairs are being assessed and we will keep everyone informed, as there are developments.    Visit the school website,http://www.gonzaga.org, for the Washington Post article and the most current information, photos and ways to help the church.

We look forward to seeing you this Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30pm in the Lower Commons for our last GMC meeting of the school year.  Father Planning will provide his traditional remarks and updates on campus, and Stephen Szolosi will be our guest speaker from Campus Ministry providing information about Service programs.  He is excited to share with us ways your sons can get more involved in service.  We will also announce the slate for the GMC Executive Board for the academic year 2017-18. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, is our last Joint GMC/GFC meeting of the year.  We will vote on the GMC Executive Board slate at this meeting as dictated by our constitution.  Our guest speaker will be Paul Buckley, alumni, math teacher and GDA producer.  Mr. Buckley will give us his unique perspective of life at Gonzaga, in the classroom and on the stage.

Does your son enjoy photography?  April 25 is the deadline for submissions to the Spirit of Gonzaga photo contest.  Please encourage him to submit his work to our contest.  We want to see the boys’ perspective of Gonzaga and this is their time to shine.  Prizes are awarded and announced at Charter Day.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the International Food Fair a great success.  The entire school community, plus the Jesuit review team, enjoyed wonderful food from all over the world as well as fabulous jazz.  The weather could not have been any better!  Many moms came to Eye Street and setup, helped serve and clean up after the event.  Thank you for all the hard work, we could not pull off this favorite day with out all your help!  A very special thanks to Lauren Malone, Stephanie McMahon and Michelle Pierpont for chairing this fabulous event.

Help is needed for our other scheduled event for the next few months.  Please see the information below and signup to help if you can for the Bake Sale for the Father McKenna Center on April 26, the Mother’s Day Flowers distribution at the Unique Residential Care Center on May 11, the Faculty & Staff Summer Send Off Luncheon on May 31, the beautiful Baccalaureate Reception on June 3, and the welcoming New Mothers Luncheon on June 7.  Please also signup to volunteer as Mentor Mom or help host a Get Acquainted Party over the summer – it is a wonderful, fun way to welcome and engage new Gonzaga families.  Information on how to help or who to contact will be coming shortly.
Many thanks to all of you for joining the GMC this year!  Your enthusiasm and support have allowed us to accomplish so much this year and your dues have helped pay for refreshments at events like the Welcome Picnic, Back to School Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, and support for Faculty Stipends for summer enrichment.  Thanks to Mia DeWitt, our Membership Chair, for her work managing GMC membership this year!
Join me in thanking Stacy Brown and Jill Gatti for providing refreshments for parents and toHazel Lychak and Sharon Persinski for arranging for and serving dinner to our teachers at Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Thank you also to Anne Barsanti Griffith for coordinating the monthly Ignatian Reflection & Prayer Group meetings and providing summaries for those who could not attend.   Much appreciation and thanks go out to Andrea Courduvelis and Lisa Roeder, our Senior Class Liaisons, who have organized the sale of the Senior Class T-shirts, helped keep the Senior parents informed of announcements, and for hosting the Senior Parent “Letting Go” night.
Many thanks to Maria Cindea and Kristen Kilguss, Faculty Treats Chairs, and their team of volunteers who were amazing hostesses each month at creative breakfast feasts to recognize and show appreciation to our Gonzaga faculty.  You still have one last chance, Friday May 5, to join in on the fun.  Come see Eye Street wake up.
Thank you to Jennifer Tobey and Tracey Taylor, our amazing Closet Chairs, who help things run more smoothly by planning and providing supplies for every event and by keeping the closets well-organized.
We are also grateful to
Eileen Wisor, GMC Family Support Chair, for her unseen work sending well-wishes on our behalf to so many in our community during times of illness, loss, injury, or celebration.   As always, we thank Irene Zaso, Communications Officer, for her masterful communications with the monthly E-newsletters and frequent E-blasts to keep you informed about happenings on Eye Street!

Got textbooks???

There will be several large boxes scattered throughout the school to collect any textbooks or paperbacks that you no longer need.  These books will be redistributed within the Gonzaga community.  Don't throw them out, other students can use them. Please bring them to the library or one of the Used Texbook Drop Off boxes located around campus.  If you have any questions, contact the library.
