This is the common platform where students from the 4 participating schools can exchange their learnings about their waste management  program. They come together to understand the problems regarding waste in their own environment and how the problems are different in other contexts and settings, and to work on a waste management  program that is appropriate to their surroundings.

  • South Africa: Mountain Cambridge School investigates the state of recycling at their school_May 2016
    11 May 2016
We presented the following questions as per worksheet on sessions.
The answers the students gave, are written underneath the questions.
    • How is waste managed right now?
Students do not know the answer as they were only focussed on the actual recycling and will                 have to investigate how the waste is managed, i.e. where are the bins emptied? Who is collecting what and when?
    • What problems do you have?
The kids that do use the bins, still mix the different types of recycling.  A lot of kids ignore the bins and just throw it into the general bin that goes to waste dump.
    • What do you want to change?
Overall littering, in other words, creating more awareness for recycling.
In South Africa, a lot of people still burn their rubbish on their premises in stead of recycling or      sending it to the waste dump which creates a lot of air pollution.
    • What ideas do you have?
Start the worm farm up again so some of the paper and organic waste can go there.
Show videos of pollution to the rest of the school so that kids can realize what happens if one keep on throwing the rubbish everywhere.
Start a polystyrene recycling day for all the kids to bring their poly to school to be collected by the people that build the "Village of Hope' with waste materials.
