I hold a PhD in Economics from the University of Cape Town and was a Carnegie Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Economics, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Currently I am an Independent Researcher and Consultant. I have worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Development at Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences, Zimbabwe. My primary research interests are in the area of Applied Microeconomics and Development Economics. I am also interested in Regional and Urban Economics, and International Trade.
As part of my Ph.D. work, I have worked with spatial datasets to understand the spatial distribution of economic activity in developing countries, such as South Africa. I constructed a spatial dataset of, firm entry from a unique business registration database, and labour migration across municipalities from census data over the period 2003 to 2011 and matched it with another spatial data on the incidence of crime, sourced from the South African Police Service. I also geocoded addresses of about 1 800 000 firms from the business registration database for the years 1996, 2001, 2010, 2011 using Google Maps Geocoding API. With these datasets, we estimate the impact of crime on firm entry and labour migration in South Africa.
Before enrolling for a Ph.D., I worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension at the University of Zimbabwe, and for the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, as a Revenue Specialist.
