The UN misquotes its own report

The AR4 SPM was released in February 2007.  This was accompanied by a press release from the 'UN News centre', which reads:

Evidence is now ‘unequivocal’ that humans are causing global warming – UN report

2 February 2007 – Changes in the atmosphere, the oceans and glaciers and ice caps now show unequivocally that the world is warming due to human activities, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said in new report released today in Paris.

However, the AR4 SPM does not say this at all!  The SPM only uses the word unequivocal in the following statement:

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level.

Note that this says nothing about whether humans are the cause.

A similar false headline was reported by the United Nations Environment Programme in a press release:

Evidence of Human-caused Global Warming “Unequivocal”, says IPCC

This blatant misrepresentation of the AR4 SPM was picked up and propagated by the world's media (see for example here and here and here).
