PACK 157 PINEWOOD DERBY RULES
Each Cub Scout must use an official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit for this current year program. Cars must have been made within the school year of the Pack level race. Cars from a previous year’s derby are NOT permitted.
To keep the derby fair and fun, all participants MUST complete their car within the following mandatory specifications:
Body length (including ornaments) must not exceed 7”
Body height (including ornaments) must not exceed 4”
Distance between wheels must be 1 ¾”
Distance between front and rear axles must be 4 ⅜”
Weight of car must not exceed 5 oz
Wheels must be from the official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit or colored official BSA wheels sold at the Scout Shop to enhance the look of the car. Wheels may NOT be altered in any way that drastically changes the outer or inner shape of the wheel. Examples (not limited to):
Over rounding
Carving to a pointed ridge
Channeling
Angling
Mold projections and sharp edges on wheel treads may be removed by sanding or trimming; however, there must be visible tread numbs on the outer perimeter of each wheel.
Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings of any kind are prohibited.
Original axle holes must be used and may not be moved, but can be straightened.
No oil, grease, or silicone spray can be used on the wheels or axles.
Powdered graphite is permissible and must be applied prior to placing the car in the “PIT.”
The entire car must stage behind the starting pin.
The underside of the front of the car may not be undercut so as to allow the car’s nose to hang out over top of the starting gate. If the nose protrudes over the starting gate and the official starter is not able to adjust to a fair start, the car will not be allowed to race.
Nothing should be attached to the underside of the car, except for weights that are recessed into the wood.
No motors or propellant may be used on the cars.
Cars with wet paint or any other wet spray-on material will not be accepted.
No sharp or loose objects of any kinds are permitted inside or outside the car.
All added items must be firmly secured to the car. Tape is not an acceptable adhesive.
A parent/guardian is to be with the Scout during registration and during the race. Scouts must be present for weigh in and race day. Cars will not be registered after weigh-ins.
All registered cars will be given a Derby identification number affixed to the bottom of the car by the registrar at weigh-in and then placed immediately in the PIT area. Once cars have been registered, weighed, and certified they will remain in possession of the race committee until the end of the competition. Once a car is placed in the PIT area it is NOT allowed to leave for adjustments, adding graphite, or for ANY reason.
NO ONE except for the race officials working in the PIT area is allowed in the PIT area.
Only emergency repairs may be completed during the races (e.g a wheel falls off). Repair time will not exceed 5 minutes and is to be completed by the Cub Scout and ONE adult in the designated area.
The Grand Prix software being used to run the Derby will randomly assign lanes. At the start of each race, the Cub Scout’s name will be called out. The Cub Scout will walk to the end of the track. When all of the Scouts are at the end of the track the race will begin. Scouts will bring their car back to the PIT area at the end of the race. The Scout must be present to race his/her car. If the Scout is not present at the time his/her name is called to race, the Scout will be charged with a loss and the race continues.
If the car should jump the track during the race, the track will be inspected and the cars will be posted once again on the same lanes and rerun.
The Pinewood Derby Race is something that is supposed to be fun for all. Let’s have a great time and cheer each other on!
Please see a member of the Committee if you have any questions/concerns!
