WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS BY DANIEL BURKHOLDER

The Point of Contact
The fundamental aspect of contact improvisation is one to one contact between dancers. Sometimes contact dances are fast and athletic, sometimes slow and meditative. In this workshop we will explore the skills needed to enter into a variety of contact improvisation dances with intention and openness. Skills will include developing greater body awareness, exploring point of contact with a partner, following the flow of a dance, and giving and receiving weight. No experience necessary, willingness to experiment and have fun is. This workshop can be done alone or as part of the weekend.

The Intentional Moment and The Witness
When we engage in a contact improvisation dance we meet our partner through touch and follow the path merging from that contact. At times we may want to add a layer of intentionality to our dancing - this maybe for exploring a new approach, getting out of our movement 'ruts', or even performing. In this workshop we will examine various forms of intentionality, as well as what happens to a dance when we have a witness. This workshop is intended for experienced dancers wishing to expand and deepen their dancing.

Inspiration as Initiation
The breath is the foundation of movement. This constant flow in and out supplies us with an ongoing rhythm in our bodies, and an ongoing source of nourishment. In this workshop we will explore breath through an Awareness Through Movement/Feldenkais lesson, solo improvisations and culminating in deeply connected and full bodied contact improvisation duets. Connecting to one's breath is an excellent opportunity to bring greater awareness to one's dancing, interrupt habitual tendencies, and open new possibilities in your dancing.

Recently giving up a distinguished career to follow his dream full-time, he shows the beauty of doing something seemingly impossible, and bares his soul through his instrument - unlike anything you've experienced.
