George Tsakopoulos, patriarch to the Tsakopoulos family, Sacramento real estate developer and businessman passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009 after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

Born July 7th, 1927 in Rizes, Tegea, Tripolis, Greece to Kyriakos and Aikaterini Tsakopoulos.  He served in the Resistance in Greece towards the end of World War Two fighting the communist guerillas and later in the Greek Army during the Greek Civil War, and was a member of the Greek Secret Service in the later stages of his military service.  He emigrated to the United States of America on April 23, 1955 with $64, and settled in Chicago where he held a number of jobs and businesses to support his family.  He came to California in 1960 and began investing in real estate almost immediately, purchasing old homes and renting them.  He married his beloved wife and life partner, Drosoula, on March 25, 1966 and he was a devoted father to his children, Katherine and Angelo.  He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, and developed a large business, Tsakopoulos Investments, for his family to carry on for generations.

He was a hard working man who built his first shopping center in 1971 with his own hands, and also built the first high-rise condominium for senior citizens a few years later.  He loved agriculture and livestock, and for a number of years owned hundreds of head of cattle.  As one of the largest landowners in the Sacramento area, he also developed countless residential, retail and office properties which he took great pride in their quality and longevity.  He loved the United States of America and the Sacramento community with all his heart, and had a deep affection for his native Greece.

George was preceded in death by his parents Kyriakos and Aikaterini, younger brother, Christo, and younger sister Anastacia.  He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-three years Drosoula, daughter Katherine and her husband Socrates and their children Christian and Alexander, son Angelo George and his wife Katerina and grandson George Angelo Tsakopoulos, who brought George marvelous joy during his battle against cancer.  He is also survived by his brothers John and Angelo, and his sisters Maria and Stavroula, and their respective families.  He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

The family so appreciates Dr. Gregory Graves and the skilled team at Sutter Cancer Center and Sutter General Hospital for their great work.
