Girl Child Network Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone Girls Empowerment Program

Girl Child Network Sierra Leone mandate comes from the girls of Sierra Leone themselves, who in joining girls’ empowerment clubs have signalled their desire for GCN Sierra Leone to lead the holistic empowerment of the girl child and to act as a voice for vulnerable girl children through leadership training, confidence building, advocacy for increased access to justice, for child friendly laws and policies, community education on child abuse and the urgent need for eradication of harmful cultural practices that hinder the full physical, spiritual and emotional growth of the girl child

Why the Girl Child ?

Daily there are disasters in homes, schools and communities that affect girls. Girls and young women are at risk of violence in the home, school and community; physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, sexual and economic exploitation, trafficking for the purposes of prostitution and forced labour. There are some girls who want educational support and others who want to start small income generating projects. Many girls trafficked and sexually enslaved want to escape but lack support to do so. Change happens when individual girls act locally and think and connect nationally and internationally. Founder members want to see innovative programs being rolled out at grassroots.

 Target Beneficiaries

GCN Sierra Leone works with girls aged between 0-18 years with the network dominated by the 9-13 age group who make up 60% of the membership which currently stands at over 3000 girls and 30 empowerment clubs in Sierra Leone. GCN’s primary target beneficiaries and its existence has always been a direct response to the plight of the girl child who for too long has been confined to the sidelines of social, economic and political justice and development. As such, GCN Sierra Leone’s mandate is to ensure the empowerment and development of its target beneficiary-the girl child. Owing to this understanding and deliberate effort to uplift the position of the poorest and most vulnerable girl child in society, GCN Sierra Leone  programmatic content is modified to ensure and make the girl child the first and most important stakeholder
