Turning Point Learning Center

Choice Makes a Difference!

Welcome to the only K – 8 charter school in Emporia, Kansas.

We are both innovative and non-traditional, offering educational choices, flexibility;

with customized education for every student.

Our philosophy is that learning can occur at any time and place and that quality learning happens in both an individual and social context

Children who need more time to master a concept, or who need more time to pursue individual interests are allowed the freedom to grow at Turning Point Learning Center.

Likewise, a child who learns at a quicker pace is never held back in their educational quest by peers or curriculum pacing.

Staff Bios
Who are we?  Click here to learn more about the staff of TPLC.

A personal touch means so much in a child’s educational experience and TPLC staff understands that each child is unique.  Every student is held responsible to their individual educational goals that are based on their starting educational levels.

Learning and Growth for the 21st Century
Students at TPLC utilize rigorous online learning, supplemented with hands-on activities and real life skills building.  Families and school staff use video conferencing and other connectivity tools to stay in touch with one another for efficient communication.
While state assessments measure the content of the learning, the application of actual life skills measure the success of the entire educational process!

Parent Involvement
Parents take an active role in the education of their students.  No longer relegated to the periphery of the classroom, families partner with TPLC staff for the overall benefit of the school community.

Virtual Program

Grades K-8
Our Virtual program has been in full swing since 2005 and continues to grow. We serve students in grades K – 8 throughout the state of Kansas by providing online curriculum.  Families have an option of OdysseyWare or K¹² curriculum.

Curriculum

  • OdysseyWare allows educators to individualize instruction and manage student data while delivering content in an engaging, multimedia format.
  • K¹² offers outstanding, highly effective curriculum that enables mastery of core concepts and skills for all kinds of minds.

Extras Come With TPLC
On-site Academies are welcome options for families, as students of all ages learn Science, Math, Art, Music, History, and Technology.  The value  of participating in a community extends to field trips to various and exciting locations.

Face To Face (f2f) Program
Grades 5-8
Our project-based, on-site program serves students in grades 5 – 8, who are driven, eager to learn, who can work with a team of their peers, and who want to be a participant in their own learning. Parents work as true partners with the school to create a full, inviting learning environment for their children.

Project based learning is a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning knowledge and 21st Century skills. The students work through an extended inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks. Special emphasis is placed on global connections in not only learning, but also actual global connections, classroom to classroom via video conferencing and other technology tools.

Community is an emphasis for the f2f program, whether it be inside the school dealing with conflicts, or learning how to responsibly participate in our local, state, national, and global communities.

Fine Arts Lessons

Blending Virtual and F2F Programming

Fine Arts instruction bridges virtual and f2f together.  Students share learning opportunities in a choir, and also with ArtSnacks, an online art community of students, families, and expert instructors.

Additionally, students have the choice to take individual lessons in either voice or instrumental music, including piano.  As a standards-based program, students also learn how to compose music, as well as  how music ties cultures together.  Lessons are assigned by student interests and are included as part of general enrollment.

A Quality Education With Personal Attention
TPLC is a public school funded just like all other public schools in Kansas.  Students at TPLC also take state assessments and was recognized with eight  Standard of Excellence awards for both Reading and Math in 2007, more than any other school in Emporia.
