Welcome to 5th grade at James Giles School!

I would like to welcome those students who attended Giles last year, and I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and the students from Leigh. I know both students and parents are filled with excitement, anxiety, and maybe a little fear facing this new adventure of middle school. It is my hope that at the end of this school year there will be nothing but amazing memories.  I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year, and I hope you and your child are as well. Students in middle school have unique academic, social, and emotional needs. It is our mission to empower students to achieve academic success as well as grow socially and emotionally in a safe environment. We are dedicated to easing the transition from elementary to middle school, and to preparing our students to be successful in high school and beyond.

This year will be a great time to set high goals and plan for some exciting learning opportunities. During these middle school years, your child will go through many changes physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually.  We hope that these changes are positive, interesting, and unforgettable.  As your child matures he/she will be expected to assume more of the responsibilities for his/her own learning.  This will include keeping track of homework assignments and long-range projects, coming to class with proper materials, and developing study skills.

Parents/guardians are essential to student success, and we encourage parents/guardians to be actively involved in their children’s education and co-curricular activities.  Be assured that the 5th grade team will work together in an effort to help your child reach his/her potential.  Our team approach is designed to assist your child to achieve success. In addition, we encourage you to communicate with us throughout the year if there is any way we can better meet the specific needs of your child. Students having difficulty are encouraged to see us for help before school, after school, or during Breakfast Club. Parents/guardians may feel free to contact us via email or telephone.  Occasionally news from our classroom will be posted on this site.  I encourage you to check back frequently to see what our class is doing at school.

We have entered a new era in education for our students as we follow curriculum as outlined in the Common Core Standards. These new standards are designed to be challenging and relevant to the real world.  The goal is to develop skills that our children will need to be successful in college and careers.
