1. de = palm tree; nu = at, entrance, edge: Beginning of the Palms
2. denu = customs, toll, border: Customs Control
The conurbation of Denu, Hedzranawo and Adafienu is known as 'Threetown'.
1. URL: "Denu, which means 'the beginning of palm trees'".
2. SS: p.226, fn.7, "For a description of Denu in this period, see GNA: ADM1/2/361, no.26: Lawson, 'Report' (1879), 21. The name of the place, 'Denu', means in fact 'customs/toll station', but it predates these developments. It was documented in 1852 by T.G.Forbes ('Daynoo') (TNA: FO84/893, incl. in Hamilton, [London] Admiralty, 10 April 1852: T.G.Forbes, 'Philomel', Whydah, 5 Feb. 1852)."
D.Westermann: p.45, "dēnu : Zollgrenze, der Platz, an dem Waren von den Zollwächtern durchgesehen werden". Further etymology is not given, but DW also has: p.41, "de : Heimat, Heimatland .. cf. denyigba". Hence a possible origin is: de = homeland; nu = entrance, border.
