Metro Light Rail

Metro Light Rail is the proposed light rail system composed of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail, and various other routes consisting of former rail lines in northern New Jersey. The system would be fully electrified allowing the Kinko Sharyo light rail vehicles found on the Hudson Bergen and Newark Light Rail lines to operate on the new light rail system. Metro Light Rail would be part of the New Jersey Transit system as many of its commuter lines would be interlinked by the proposed expanded light rail.

Metro Light Rail would be composed of the following lines.
  • Hudson Bergen Light Rail - current light rail system radiating from Hoboken north to Tonnelle Avenue via the New York Central's former West Shore Line and south to Bayonne and Jersey City's West Side via former Central Railroad of New Jersey lines.
  • Newark Light Rail - current light rail system originating at Newark Penn Station to Grove Street on the Newark City Subway and Broad Street Station on the Newark Light Rail.
  • Northern Branch - A proposed extension of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail from Tonnelle Avenue to Nyack, New York via the former Erie Railroad's Northern Railroad of New Jersey.
  • Cross County Line - Another proposed extension of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail from Tonnelle Avenue west to Hawthorne and Paterson via the New York Susquehanna & Western route.
  • Former Erie Main Line - A new proposed line radiating from Hoboken via Pavonia-Newport to the former Pennsylvania Railroad 6th Street Embankment in Jersey City and then west to the former Erie Railroad Bergen Arches leading to Secaucus Junction. From there the line would follow part of the old Erie Main and then split away to reach the Meadowlands before rejoining the former Erie Main in Rutherford to Passaic and Paterson.
  • Former Lackawanna Boonton Line - A new proposed line from Paterson that would follow part of the former Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad Boonton Branch to the Wayne/Route 23 Park & Ride.
  • Former Erie Newark Branch - Proposed extension of the Newark Light Rail from Broad Street Station to Paterson via the former Erie Newark Branch.
  • Former Erie Greenwood Lake Line - Proposed line radiating from Secaucus Junction to Bay Street in Montclair via the former Erie New York & Greenwood Lake Railroad. The line was also part of the New Jersey Transit Boonton Line until it's consolidation into the Montclair-Boonton Line in 2002.
  • Caldwell Branch - The light rail line from the former Erie Greenwood Lake Line would continue along Bloomfield Avenue where it would join with the former Erie Caldwell Branch in Caldwell. It would then follow the Morristown & Erie Railroad to Morristown.
  • Orange Branch - A proposed extension of the Newark City Subway from Grove Street to Orange using the former Erie Railroad Orange Branch. The section of the Newark City Subway already uses part of the old Orange Branch to access Grove Street and Silver Lake. This line would also be extended east to join with the Erie Greenwood Lake Line in Forest Hill.
  • Newark & New York Railroad - A proposed extension of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail from West Side Avenue to Newark Penn Station via the former Central Railroad of New Jersey Newark & New York Railroad over the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers. The line would follow under Market Street in Newark to access Penn Station.
  • Newark Elizabeth Light Rail - Proposed light rail line from Newark Penn Station south to Newark International Airport and the Jersey Gardens.
  • Central Railroad of New Jersey Main Line - Proposed extension of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail from Bayonne over the Newark Bay to the Newark Elizabeth Light Rail and beyond to Cranford via the former Central Railroad of New Jersey to Cranford.
  • Rahway Valley Railroad - Proposed branch linking Summit with the Central Railroad of New Jersey Main Line.
  • Waterfront Bypass - Proposed line in Jersey City and Hoboken linking the Tonnelle Avenue line with the Bergen Arches and West Side/Bayonne Lines by bypassing Hoboken and the Jersey City Waterfront.
