Foreword:
This biography has been republished online in order to commemorate the life and practice of Richard "Dick" Price, the co-founder and director of Esalen Institute. It is partially based upon a dissertation written by Barclay James "Eric" Erikson. That text was almost impossible to read, in large part because it was an academic prerequisite. Even so, it contained some of the best information about Dick -- especially about his early life. After Eric's death his dissertation was extensively edited, with the agreement of his heir, in order to add missing details and make it more readable. Now that edited edition has been published online for the first time to allow access by a wider audience.
The current text has not gone without criticism -- primarily that it is obscure and over-analytic. While those criticisms are not totally without merit, the importance of this resource cannot be questioned because of its valuable insights into Dick's life and his method of Gestalt Practice.
Since its initial publication, additional resources have become available to supplement this text, including several articles published on Medium: https://medium.com/@Callaban
