Session 8

The Ice-age - Icehouse earth, as some now call it.....I recall the way I was taught this for A-level Geography. It seemed so simple: the earth cooled down. End of explanation - and we were definitely never asked why.

That will NOT DO for our class, who were all born asking questions and for whom the why is just as important as the how and the when.

So we're going to look at Icehouse earth as closely as we can (without getting frostbite....) and keep an eye on the fossil evidence that throws light on current ideas.....of which the starfish to the right is one example.

Here are some useful links to get you started:

Firstly from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

And secondly a good animation from NASA

At the end of the session a special request was made: can we look at an overview of places that can be visited in the UK to see some of the features that illustrate the effects of glaciation, and can we also look through the effect glaciation has had on us as a species...

Well that sounds like great fun to me!
