The Chirp Wireless Beacon is a new technology recently introduced to add a new dimension to Geocaching. A Radio Frequency Beacon is placed so that when a Geocacher with a compatible GPS device arrives within about 10 yards of the beacon will start receiving data which can provide the Geocacher with instructions for finding the hidden Geocache.
The Chirp wireless beacon is compatible with any outdoor handheld that has the ability to wirelessly receive or transfer waypoints, routes, tracks, and geocaches to another handheld. Below is the list of devices that can program and detect Chirp.
There are now some apps for iPhones and Android available that say they accept CHIRP signals.
Notice We are not endorsing any of these products or in any way suggest that we know how well they work. Update: It was recently demonstrated to us that the Android app really works very well.
Finding a Chirp
1. Select the Geocaching button on your GPS Device.
2. Select Show Chirp Details.
When your device detects a chirp, the chirp transfers data to your device. When the data transfer is complete, you can select Show Chirp Details to view the information.
