Tips from Natures Chemist - A - Z

Herbs, Spices, Fruits & Vegetables - Plants

The following are tit-bits of nutritional info F.Y.I.

Foods to Boost Your Metabolism

Recommended to eat 5 portions of fruit or and vegetables a day to top up your vitamin, mineral, phytonutrients and fibre everyday.

There's enough variations to keep it interesting. Eat them in their natural state as much as possible to get the best benefits - except tomatoes which increase it's lycopene content in the cooking process.

It's also recommended to eat your fruit a  minimum of an hour before your meal to cleanse the system as it digests very quickly  in relation to the other food groups. If eaten after meals, they digest and then start to ferment whilst the rest of the food is bring digested, leading to bloating from the gas produced and other unpleasant side effects.

Power up your salads with spinach, bell (sweet) peppers, tomatoes, watercess, kale, avocado eaten together they boost the vitamin C, Lycopene & Lutein content!

Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has been used to heal both internally and externally. Derived from the Aloe Vera plant, it has long, spiked leaves, which are thick-skinned and contain a clear gel-like substance. It is used today in many products, including cosmetics, skin lotions and moisturizers, burn gels and even sun screen creams.
It speeds the healing of many skin injuries, including burns, hives and poison ivy; and also acts as a laxative. For minor burns, the stabilized aloe gel is applied topically to the affected area of the skin three to five times per day. Treatment of more serious burns should only be done under the supervision of a healthcare professional. In addition, apart from providing relief from itching, it helps to heal blisters and sores. For people suffering from Psoriasis, Aloe Vera has provided relief by reducing the pain and itching. It has been proved that the gel causes considerable improvement in the nature of lesions as well.
The laxative element of the plant works by preventing the absorption of water from the bowel. For constipation, a single 50-200 mg capsule of aloe latex can be taken each day for a maximum of ten days. This component of Aloe also kills some bacteria, and is believed to act against a variety of viruses including herpes, chickenpox, and flu. It is recommended not to combine Aloe with other medications that are used to flush water and potassium from the body.
For internal use of aloe gel, two tablespoons, three times per day, is used by some people for inflammatory bowel conditions, such as Crohn’s disease and colitis. However, while commercial gels and juices, which are processed under strict controls, can be found at most health food stores as well as many supermarkets, it is always recommended that one consult a physician before self-treating a medical condition.

  • Apricots

Apricots surround Beta-carotene which will helps you to prevent radical harm and also will helps to protect your eyes. Apricot contains 17 of calories, zero fat, and just 1 gram of fiber. You can eat Apricots dried or even soft.
Apricot kernels contain selenium which is said to prevent cancer  and is also reported to enhance hair/nails/skin health and shine.

  • Avocado
Rich in Fatty Acids, Vitamin A & E - Used in salads/meals and in skin care, hair care and nail care because of it's high nourishing, emollient qualities. Vit A used in supporting eye health. As mentioned previously when eaten with tomatoes boosts the Vitamin C, Lycopene and Lutein content.

Beware of popular health myths. For instance, throughout the 1990s and into the first few years of this century, popular health “experts” often warned against eating coconut oil or coconut milk, causing many people to eschew a food now known to offer many health benefits. Another lingering popular health myth warns against avocados, which wrongly labels them as a dietary culprit because of their caloric and fat content. Yet, the truth is avocados can boost health in at least 5 ways:

1. Protein

Avocados provide all 18 essential amino acids necessary for the body to form a complete protein. Unlike the protein in steak, which is difficult for most people to digest, avocado protein is readily absorbed by the body because avocados also contain fiber. If you are trying to cut down on animal sources of protein in your diet, or if you are a vegetarian, vegan or raw foodist seeking more protein, avocados are a great nutritional ally to include not merely as an occasional treat, but as a regular part of your diet.

2. Beneficial Fats

Avocados provide the healthy kind of fat that your body needs. Like olive oil, avocadoes boost levels of HDL (the “good” cholesterol). HDL cholesterol can help protect against the damage caused by free radicals. This type of cholesterol also helps regulate triglyceride levels, preventing diabetes. A study published early this year in the Canadian Medical Association Journal  found that a vegetarian diet, which includes HDL fats, can reduce levels of LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) as effectively as statin drugs.

3. Carotenoids

Avocados are an excellent source of carotenoids. Although many people associate carotenoids only with red and orange produce, avocadoes are also an excellent source of this phytonutrient. Avocadoes, also known as alligator pears, offer a diverse range of carotenoids including not only the better known ones such as beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lutein, but also lesser known varieties of this type of phytonutrient such as neoxanthin, zeaxanthin, chrysanthemaxanthin, neochrome, beta-cryptoxanthin and violaxanthin. Every time you consume foods rich in carotenoids, you deliver high quality vitamin A to your body, thereby protecting eye health. Carotenoids also enhance the functioning of the immune system and promote healthy functioning of the reproductive system. Since carotenoids are fat soluble, eating avocados optimizes the absorption of these nutrients.

The combined effect of the deluxe package of nutrients contained in avocados offers powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. Avocados’ unique combination of Vitamins C and E, carotenoids, selenium, zinc, phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids helps guard against inflammation. This means avocados can help prevent or mitigate against both osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis.

5. Heart Health

The fat content, which causes some uninformed health “experts” to deem avocados as unhealthy, actually provides protection against heart diseases. Studies have shown that oleic acid improves cardiovascular health. Oleic acid is the primary fatty acid in avocados. Many people now take supplements in order to consume more omega-3 fatty acids to lower their risk of heart disease. Avocados are rich in omega-3, delivering 160 milligrams per cup of alpha-linolenic acid.

Choosing and Eating

To get the most nutritional value from avocados, avoid those which have become over-ripe. You can identify these at the store because they will have dents and feel overly soft when you hold them. A ripe avocado should have no dents in its skin and will feel slightly soft when squeezed. You can also buy unripe avocados, which feel very hard when gripped, and permit them to ripen at home. The portion of the avocado closest to the skin is the most dense in nutrients, so be sure to scrape the skin clean before discarding it.

  • Basil - Used in hot water is excellent for relieving sniffles; Anti-bacterial; Boosts the immune system - rich in Vit A & C & Zinc; Anti-inflammatory.
  •  Basil - Pounded in a pestle and mortar or food processer with garlic, pine nuts, parmesan and olive oil to make pesto; added to tomato-based pasta sauces
Basil, or Sweet Basil, is a common name for the culinary herb Ocimum basilicum, of the family Lamiaceae, sometimes known as Saint Joseph's Wort in some English-speaking countries.
Free radical damage is a contributing factor in many other conditions as well, including asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The beta-carotene found in basil may help to lessen the progression of these conditions while protecting cells from further damage.

Basil is also a good source of
magnesium, which promotes cardiovascular health by prompting muscles and blood vessels to relax, thus improving blood flow and lessening the risk of irregular heart rhythms or a spasming of the heart muscle or a blood vessel.

In addition to the health benefits and nutrients described above, basil also emerged from our food ranking system as a very good source of iron, and calcium, and a good source of potassium and vitamin C.

Broccoli - Broccoli is said to prevent breast cancer, and contains lot of Vitamins including Vitamin C and beta-carotene.
A single cup of chopped broccoli contains more than twenty (25) of calories, zero fat, and only 3 grams of fibre
Broccoli contains a substantial amount of nutrients that are extremely good for health including vitamins A, C, folic acid, fiber and calcium. This cruciferous vegetable has also become popular because of its ability to offer the following health benefits:

    1. Prevents cancer. Broccoli is rich in glucoraphanin which can be processed by the human body into a kind of compound capable of preventing cancer. It works by eliminating H. pylori from a human body which is known as a bacterium that triggers gastric cancer. The vegetable is also rich in indole-3-carbinol which is an extremely powerful antioxidant. Anti-carcinogen properties are also present in broccoli and these are effective in hindering the development of prostate, cervical and breast cancer while also improving liver health.

    2. Maintains a healthier nervous system. This can be attributed to its high potassium content. This works not only in maintaining a healthier nervous system but also in allowing the human brain to function optimally. It also works in promoting the regular growth of muscles.

    3. Regulates blood pressure. This is possible because of the presence of magnesium, calcium and potassium in broccoli.

    4. Reduces cholesterol. The vegetable contains a huge amount of soluble fiber which is proven to be effective in drawing out cholesterol from the body.

    5. A great addition to your diet. For those who are dieting, broccoli can be a perfect addition to their diet plans. This is rich in fiber which prevents digestive problems and constipation, curbs overeating and maintains a lower and healthier level of blood sugar.

Understanding the possible health risks of Broccoli; however, also comes with components that are harmful
to the body so everyone is still advised to watch their intake of it.
For those who are taking blood thinning medications, the excessive intake of broccoli is not a wise move since
it may interfere with the medications, thereby increasing their risk of suffering from stroke.
Eating over one to two cups of broccoli a day may also increase the chances of dealing with kidney stones.
It should also be noted that the manner through which the vegetable is cooked can impact its ability to
provide the right level of nutrition. Eating raw broccoli is the best way to get all its offered nutrients.
Cooking it using a low cooking and steaming temperature for approximately five minutes also works in
    retaining its nutrients.

Bronchial Cough Remedy - Technically an inflammation of the mucus membranes, bronchitis causes coughing and shortness of breath, especially when you exert yourself.

Not big on modern medicine as a general rule, I started researching some reputable herbal sites on line and reading through a few books on herbal remedies my mother has passed down to me.  There were lots of natural bronchitis remedies cited, but many of the ingredients were things I didn't have on hand.

But I also read lots of references to chai tea and the spices used in the chai mixes.  Many folks swore that drinking chai tea could 'cure' bronchitis.  Not a huge tea drinker, I decided to instead add the various spices to my morning coffee.  And lo and behold, within two days, my cough was 90% gone. The tightness in my chest abated the following day.  After a week of using the natural remedy, I was able to record an hour long podcast without coughing once!  I am a believer and here is my 'recipe'.
    Natural Bronchitis/Cough Relief

    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
    1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
    1 teaspoon honey

Mix the above ingredients into a cup of hot coffee each morning.   I use a small whisk to blend the spices into the liquid.

It's as simple as that.  No cough drops, no cough medicine with codeine. Just good old-fashioned spices and honey.
AND it actually tastes pretty good!

p.s. if you would rather, whisk the spices and honey into 2 Cups of hot water.

    Keep Checking Those Labels
    Dark Chocolate - 70% +
Why we love it: (As if we need to give a reason.)
If ever there were a month for chocolate, February is it -- and when eaten in moderation, chocolate has loads of benefits, beyond just the obvious appeal
it has for your taste buds. As we've previously reported, it is high in
antioxidants, may help reduce inflammation and can help boost your mood.
It's the best medical news in ages. Studies in two prestigious scientific
journals say dark chocolate -- but not white chocolate or milk chocolate -
    is good for you.

    Dark Chocolate Lowers Blood Pressure

Dark chocolate -- not white chocolate -- lowers high blood pressure, say Dirk Taubert, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the

University of Cologne, Germany. Their report appears in the Aug. 27 issue of

The Journal of the American Medical Association.

But that's no license to go on a chocolate binge. Eating more dark chocolate can help lower blood pressure -- if you've

reached a certain age and have mild high blood pressure, say the researchers. But you have to balance the extra calories by

    eating less of other things.

    Antioxidants in Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate -- but not milk chocolate or dark chocolate eaten with milk -- is a potent antioxidant, report Mauro Serafini,

PhD, of Italy's National Institute for Food and Nutrition Research in Rome, and colleagues. Their report appears in the

    Aug. 28 issue of Nature.

Antioxidants gobble up free radicals, destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments.

"Our findings indicate that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate ... and may therefore negate the

potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate."

Translation: Say "Dark, please," when ordering at the chocolate counter. Don't even think of washing it down with milk. And if

health is your excuse for eating chocolate, remember the word "moderate" as you nibble.

    The Studies

Taubert's team signed up six men and seven women aged 55-64. All had just been diagnosed with mild high blood pressure -

on average, systolic blood pressure (the top number) of 153 and diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) of 84.

Every day for two weeks, they ate a 100-gram candy bar and were asked to balance its 480 calories by not eating other foods

similar in nutrients and calories. Half the patients got dark chocolate and half got white chocolate.

Those who ate dark chocolate had a significant drop in blood pressure (by an average of 5 points for systolic and an average

of 2 points for diastolic blood pressure). Those who ate white chocolate did not.

In the second study, Serafini's team signed up seven healthy women and five healthy men aged 25-35.

On different days they each ate 100 grams of dark chocolate by itself, 100 grams of dark chocolate with a small glass of

whole milk, or 200 grams of milk chocolate.

An hour later, those who ate dark chocolate alone had the most total antioxidants in their blood. And they had higher levels

of epicatechin, a particularly healthy compound found in chocolate. The milk chocolate eaters had the lowest epicatechin

    levels of all.

"Cocoa contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties and can suppress oxidation of low-density lipoprotein ['bad' cholesterol] which can cause

cardiovascular disease [including stroke]," study author Susanna Larsson, an associate professor in the division of nutritional epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute

in Stockholm, told HealthDay about the findings, which were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

A study published earlier this year in the Chemistry Central Journal found that chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, packing more polyphenols and flavanols than fruit juice.

"Cacao seeds thus provide nutritive value beyond that derived from their macronutrient composition and appear to meet the popular media's definition of a 'Super Fruit,'" the study authors wrote in the conclusion section of their findings.

Numerous popular media sources have developed lists of "Super Foods" and, more recently, "Super Fruits". Such distinctions often are based on the antioxidant capacity and content of naturally occurring compounds such as polyphenols within those whole fruits or juices of the fruit which may be linked to potential health benefits. Cocoa powder and chocolate are made from an extract of the seeds of the fruit of the Theobroma cacao tree.

FRUIT - EATING FRUIT - This is informative!

We all think eating fruit means just buying fruit, cutting it up and popping it into our mouths.
    It's not that easy.

It's important to know how and when to eat fruit.

What's the correct way to eat fruit?

Eating fruit like that plays a major role in detoxifying your system,
supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight
    loss and other life activities.

For example, let's say you eat two slices of bread, then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the

stomach into the intestines, but it's prevented from doing so.

In the meantime, the whole meal rots and ferments, and turns to acid.
The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the
stomach, and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.
Fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas.
    Hence, you bloat!
    * Eat your fruit on an empty stomach, or before your meal!
    You've heard people complain:
    Every time I eat watermelon I burp;
    when I eat durian my stomach bloats;
when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc.
This will not happen if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach.
Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice.

You can go on a 3-day fruit-fast to cleanse your body -
Eat fruit and drink fruit juice for just 3 days,
and you will be surprised when your friends say how radiant you look!

    * Don't believe the HYPE!

There's no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic,
because all fruit becomes alkaline in our body, according to Dr.

Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. I
f you have mastered the correct way of eating fruit, you have the Secret of Beauty,

Longevity, Health, Energy, Happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice,
NOT the concentrated juice from the cans/boxes. Don't drink juice that

has been heated. Don't eat cooked fruit; you don't get the nutrients at all.
You get only the taste. Cooking destroys all of the vitamins.

If you must drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly,
because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it.

    Foods To Avoid
Artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, emulsifiers, sweeteners have saturated the food supply for more than
four decades. We are on the precipice of discovering what our toxic food industry has done to our bodies
and our environment. There is a heightened awareness and a sense of caution on the minds of most grocery
shoppers, so let’s make it easier for them. Here are 25 of the most common toxic ingredients you must avoid
in foods. The discovery of even one of these ingredients on a food label means “stay away.”

This list is by no means all inclusive as there are dozens of other culprits, but these are the most commonly
used by the food industry with little regard to consumer’s health.

    1. Artificial Flavors

Artificial flavorings are derived from chemicals made in a laboratory and offer absolutely no nutritional value
and are a magnet for processed foods. They show up in almost everything today, including bread, cereals,
flavored yogurt, soups mixes, and cocktail mixers, so they can be hard to avoid. Every single artificial
flavor in the food industry has some kind of detrimental health effect. These include neurotoxicity,
organ, developmental, reproductive toxicity and cancer.

    2. Enriched Wheat

Wheat is already one of those grains that should be avoided, but the key word to watch out for is ‘enrichment’.
That means niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, and iron are added after these and other key nutrients
are stripped out in the first place during the refining process. That applies to whether it’s wheat, rye, or
other grains. Enriched flour is really just refined flour that has had a few nutrients re-added to it, but not
enough to make any food made from this nutritionally worthy.

    3. Hydrogentated or Fractionated Oils

Fractionating oil is a process most often used on palm and palm kernel oil that involves heating the oil, then
cooling it quickly so that it breaks up into fractions (hence the name). The key thing is that the filtration
process separates out most of the liquid part of the oil, leaving a high concentration of solid unhealthy fat
behind which is terribly toxic for human consumption.

Hydrogenated oils are oils that are often healthy in their natural state, but are quickly turned into poisons
through the manufacturing and processing they undergo. They take these naturally healthy oils such as
palm, kernel, soybean, corn oil, canola oil or coconut oil and they heat it anywhere from five hundred to
one thousand degrees. They then become fantastic preservatives because all the enzymatic activity in
the oil has been neutralized during the hydrogenating process. Hydrogenated oils are the closest thing
you can get to plastic sludge running through your body. If you see “hydrogenated” anywhere on an
ingredient list, run like the wind.

    4. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

The food additive “MSG” is a slow poison which hides behind dozens of names, such as natural flavoring,
yeast extract, autolyzed yeast extract, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, caseinate, textured protein,
hydrolyzed pea protein and many others. Currently, labeling standards do not require MSG to be listed in
the ingredient list of thousands of foods.

MSG is not a nutrient, vitamin, or mineral and has no health benefits. The part of MSG that negatively
affects the human body is the “glutamate”, not the sodium. The bound glutamic acid in certain foods
(corn, molasses, wheat) is broken down or made “free” by various processes (hydrolyzed, autolyzed, modified
or fermented with strong chemicals, bacteria, or enzymes) and refined to a white crystal that resembles sugar.

There are a growing number of Clinicians and Scientists who are convinced that excitotoxins play a critical
role in the development of several neurological disorders, including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal
neural development, certain endocrine disorders, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative
diseases; a group of diseases which includes: ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s
    disease, and olivopontocerebellar degeneration.

    5. Sugar

The single largest source of calories for Americans comes from sugar.Sugar is loaded into your soft drinks,
fruit juices, sports drinks, and hidden in almost all processed foods–from bologna to pretzels to Worcestershire
sauce to cheese spread. And now most infant formula has the sugar equivalent of one can of Coca-Cola, so
babies are being metabolically poisoned from day one if taking formula. Sugar changes metabolism, raises
blood pressure, critically alters the signaling of hormones and causes significant damage to the liver —
the least understood of sugar’s damages. These health hazards largely mirror the effects of drinking too
much alcohol, which they point out in their commentary is the distillation of sugar. If it’s not a natural
sugar, it doesn’t belong in your food.

    6. High Fructose Corn Syrup

A few years ago, the Corn Refiners Association petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow
the term ‘corn sugar’ as an alternative label declaration for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The reason?
Too many people were finding out how lethal HFCS was for the human body.

HFCS causes insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension, increased weight gain, and not to mention
    manufactured from genetically modified corn.

    7. Potassium Benzoate and Sodium Benzoate

Sodium Benzoate can convert into lethal carcinogenic poison when combined with absorbic acid.
Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium
benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory. What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging
an important area of DNA in the “power station” of cells known as the mitochondria.
“These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it:
they knock it out altogether.” he stated.

Potassium benzoate often shows up in seemingly innocuous foods such as apple cider, low-fat salad dressings,
syrups, jams, olives, and pickles. It is just as hazardous as Sodium Benzoate so read your labels.

    8. Artificial Coloring

Food colorings still on the market are linked with cancer. Blue 1 and 2, found in beverages, candy, baked
goods and pet food, have been linked to cancer in mice. Red 3, used to dye cherries, fruit cocktail, candy,
and baked goods, has been shown to cause thyroid tumors in rats. Green 3, added to candy and beverages,
has been linked to bladder cancer. The widely used yellow 6, added to beverages, sausage, gelatin,
baked goods, and candy, has been linked to tumors of the adrenal gland and kidney.

    9. Acesulfame-K

Acesulfame-K, also known as acesulfame potassium, represents one of the food additives used for sweetening
aliments and drinks. It is approved by the FDA, but there are several potential problems correlated with
consumption of this food additive. Even though there are many studies that attest its safety, acesulfame
potassium is still suspected of causing benign thyroid tumors. In rats, the development of such tumors took
only 3 months, a period in which the concentration of this additive in the consumed food was between 1
and 5 percent. This is a very short period of time, so the substance is believed to have significant c
arcinogenic properties. Methylene chloride, a solvent used in the manufacture of acesulfame potassium,
is the substance that may give the food additive its potential carcinogenic characteristics.

    10. Sucralose

Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common chlorocarbons include carbon
tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature’s Doberman
attack dog, a highly excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach, disinfectants,
insecticide, WWI poison gas and hydrochloric acid. Chlorocarbons are never nutritionally compatible
with our metabolic processes and are wholly incompatible with normal human metabolic functioning.
Sucralose is a very common additive in protein mixes and drinks so beware all of you who love to add
    these into your smoothies.

    11. Aspartame

The sale of aspartame, with only four calories per gram and 200 times sweeter than sugar, is sold under
the trademarks NutraSweet and Equal. Results indicate that aspartame is a multi-potential carcinogen,
even consumed daily at 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. That is a lower quantity than the maximum
recommended by the FDA. It’s one reason you should never purchase major brands of chewing gums.

    12. BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) are used to preserve common
household foods. Any processed food that has a long shelf life is often filled with BHA. They are found in
cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They are oxidants, which form potentially
cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.

    13. Propyl Gallate

Another preservative, often used in conjunction with BHA and BHT. It is sometimes found in meat products,
chicken soup base, and chewing gum. Animals studies have suggested that it could be linked to cancer.

    14. Sodium Chloride

A dash of sodium chloride, more commonly known as salt, is the culprit that the mainstream media and
medical community claim we should stay away from. They’re right, but only because it’s not real salt.
Common table salt (sodium chloride) has almost nothing in common with traditional rock or sea salt.
If a food label lists salt, or sodium chloride as an ingredient, that’s the bad stuff and you need to avoid
    these foods wherever possible.

    15. Soy

Although it’s often lauded as a healthy, cholesterol-free, cheap, low-fat protein alternative to meat, soy is
NOT a health food. Any foods that list soy in any form as an ingredient should be avoided. Soy protein,
soy isolate, and soy oil are present in about 60 percent of the foods on the market and have been shown
to impair fertility and affect estrogen in women, lower sex drive, and trigger puberty early in children.
Soy can also add to the imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

The only soy products fit for human consumption are fermented and organic and I can guarantee you will
never find this type of soy in any processed foods. The majority of soy is GMO and you can’t get around this.
Regardless of who I am speaking with, soy is one of those foods I use to gauge the nutritional IQ of others.
You would not believe how many health practitioners and even Naturopathic Doctors still think soy is a
health food. Please don’t touch this stuff.

    16. Corn

We are at the point where all corn products, including fresh corn should be avoided. The percentage of
genetically modified corn is just far too high. You will never know if you are actually consuming
organic corn. Modified cornstarch, dextrose, maltodextrin, and corn oil should all be avoided.
All are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can promote inflammation, cancer, and heart disease.
While your body needs both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to perform at its full potential, most experts
recommend an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 1:1–currently most Americans consume about 15-20 times
    more omega-6 acids than omega-3s.

    17. Potassium Sorbate

As one of the most prolific preservatives in the food industry, it is difficult to find an ice cream without
potassium sorbate. However, it is not only recommended to avoid this chemical, it’s a necessity to eliminate
it from our foods. The food industry and its scientists will parrot endless myths that potassium sorbate is
not a health threat because of its safety record and non-toxic profile. This could not be further from the truth.

Food and chemical toxicology reports have labeled potassium sorbate as a carcinogen, showing positive
mutation results in the cells of mammals. Other studies have shown broad systemic and toxic effects
on non-reproductive organs in animals. No long term studies have ever been initiated on either animals
or humans, so there is simply not enough evidence to theorize what could happen after years of ingesting
this preservative. However, based on short-term carcinogenic and toxic effects, is it worth the risk to find out?

    18. Soy Lecithin

Soy Lecithin has been lingering around our food supply for over a century. It is an ingredient in literally
hundreds of processed foods, and also sold as an over the counter health food supplement. However, most people
don’t realize what soy lecithin actually is, and why the dangers of ingesting this additive far exceed its benefits.

Soybean lecithin comes from sludge left after crude soy oil goes through a “degumming” process.
It is a waste product containing solvents and pesticides. The toxic hexane extraction process is what is
commonly used in soybean oil manufacture today. Another big problem associated with soy lecithin comes from
the origin of the soy itself. Look out for this emulsifier in ice creams, chocolate and many processed creams.

    19. Polysorbate 80

Polysorbate 80 has been found to negatively affect the immune system and cause severe anaphylactic shock
which can kill. Food and Chemical Toxicology has shown that Polysorbate 80 causes infertility.
It accelerates maturing, causes changes to the vagina and womb lining, hormonal changes, ovary
deformities and degenerative follicles. What is very suspicious about this ingredient is its addition to
vaccines. Scientists are obviously aware of its ability to cause infertility yet it continues to appear in
children’s vaccines. You will also commonly find this in a child’s favorite treat, ice cream.

    20. Canola oil

Canola or rapeseed oil is poisonous to living things and is an excellent insect repellent. It is an industrial oil,
not a food. It is a genetically modified plant designed through intensive breeding and genetic engineering
techniques. The Canadian government and industry paid the FDA $50 million dollars to have canola oil
placed on the (GRAS) List, “Generally Recognized As Safe”. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find
products that do not contain Canola oil. Please do not buy any food product containing canola oil.

Garlic related to the aloe, lilly and onion family, is a blood thinner
but also seems to have the ability to break down fat.
Most people can take it or leave it but by adding garlic to your diet, even in amounts you cannot detect,
will help you in your fat burning goals and get a number of other benefits. Garlic is also a diuretic.

    Benefits of Green Tea
While green tea has been used in eastern cultures for over 4,000 years, only recently has it been recognized for its medicinal properties in western culture. Here are just 6 of the many health benefits that green tea can provide.

    * Protect your smile. Green tea contains bacteria fighting agents that kill the help stop plaque production. Less plaque means you have cleaner, healthier teeth and gums. Another plus, it also kills the bacteria responsible for bad breath.

    * Prevent cancer. EGCG is a powerful antioxidant found in many teas, but is present in much larger concentrations in green tea. Antioxidants combat chemicals that are naturally produced in the body that can cause cancer and other health issues. Studies have shown one substance in green tea can slow the growth of cancer cells. While research hasn’t been done on every type of cancer, green tea has shown that it may reduce the risk of one cancer up to 60 percent. It has also been shown it may reduce the reoccurrence of certain cancers.

    * Promotes a health heart. The EGCG in Green Tea has been shown to lower total cholesterol levels. Specifically, it lowered bad cholesterol more than it does good cholesterol. EGCG also helps prevent against heart attack and stroke by inhibiting the production of blood clots. Green tea also helps to lower levels of stress hormones in the body, leaving you more relaxed. Being stressed out can cause damage to the heart along with the rest of your body. Drinking green tea could help keep your heart beating a lot longer.

    * Boost immune system. While green tea can help fight bacteria in your mouth, it can also help fight diseases in the rest of your body. Green tea contains an amino acid that helps fight bacteria and improve the immune response in your body. If you regularly drink green tea, you may find you get sick a lot less.

    * Ease rheumatoid arthritis. Green tea is not only beneficial in easing the symptoms of this painful disease; it has also been shown to help prevent you from ever getting it. In China, where more people drink green tea regularly, there is a much lower incidence of rheumatoid arthritis.

    * Lose weight. When you eat a lot of carbohydrates, your body responds by producing a lot of insulin; leaving you tired and craving more food. Green tea has been shown to help keep blood sugar at lower levels so you don’t produce as much insulin. This can help you eat less and lose weight. Studies have also found that green tea can speed up how fast your body metabolizes certain foods. And the faster your metabolism, the faster you slim down.
While these are all great health benefits, you should realize that drinking green tea every so often is probably not going to make a big difference to your weight. Many of the studies that produced results had participants drinking up to 10 glasses of green tea a day! If you find you’re just can’t drink enough green tea, there are supplements available that are green tea based; however, the best option is the real thing.
This summer add a healthy kick to ice cream by making it with antioxidant-rich green tea. It is a very popular flavor combination in Japan.

Indian Frankincense (Boswellia) - Respiratory, Digestive, Endocrine & Immune systems - Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Ileitis - Asthma is characterized by chronic bronchial airway inflammation resulting in increased mucus production and airway hyper-responsiveness. The underlying process appears to be an out-of-balance immune activity: overactive humoral immunity and underactive cell-mediated immunity. Boswellic acids have been shown to inhibit leukotriene biosynthesis, thus lessening excessive humoral inflammatory response. Rheumatoid Arthrits and Osteoarthritis - clinical studies using herbal formulas containing boswellia have yielded good results in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that the boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory conditions. Boswellia inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the body, specifically leukotrienes via inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, the key enzyme of leukotriene synthesis. As opposed to NSAIDs, boswellia does not decrease glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis nor does long-term use of boswellia lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach. Controlled, double blind studies have shown that boswellia extracts are very helpful for inflammatory bowel conditions including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Recent studies also suggest that boswellic acids exert significant anti-cancer, anti-microbial and immune-potentiating effects.

Mushrooms Like the onion helps thin the blood,

Mushrooms are a low-calorie food usually eaten cooked or raw and as garnish to a meal.

Dietary mushrooms are a good source of B vitamins, such as riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid, and the essential minerals,

selenium, copper and potassium. Fat, carbohydrate and calorie content are low, with absence of vitamin C and sodium.

There are approximately 20 calories in an ounce of mushrooms

     Medicinal Properties

    Main article: Medicinal mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are mushrooms or extracts used or studied as possible treatments for diseases.

Some mushroom materials, including polysaccharides, glycoproteins and proteoglycans, modulate immune system responses and

inhibit tumor growth in preliminary research, whereas other isolates show potential cardiovascular, antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic,

anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. Currently, several extracts have widespread use in Japan, Korea and China, as

adjuncts to radiation treatments and chemotherapy, even though clinical evidence of efficacy in humans has not been confirmed.

Historically, mushrooms have long been thought to hold medicinal value, especially in traditional Chinese medicine.

They have been studied in modern medical research since the 1960s, where most studies use extracts, rather than whole mushrooms.

Only a few specific extracts have been tested for efficacy in laboratory research. Polysaccharide-K and lentinan are among extracts

best understood from in vitro research, animal models such as mice, or early-stage human pilot studies.

Preliminary experiments show glucan-containing mushroom extracts may affect function of the innate and adaptive immune systems,

functioning as bioresponse modulators. In some countries, extracts of polysaccharide-K, schizophyllan,

polysaccharide peptide, or lentinan are government-registered adjuvant cancer therapies.

    Other uses

    A tinder fungus, Fomes fomentarius

Mushrooms can be used for dyeing wool and other natural fibers. The chromophores of mushroom dyes are organic compounds

and produce strong and vivid colors, and all colors of the spectrum can be achieved with mushroom dyes. Before the invention of #

synthetic dyes, mushrooms were the source of many textile dyes.

Some fungi, types of polypores loosely called mushrooms, have been used as fire starters (known as tinder fungi).

Mushrooms and other fungi play a role in the development of new biological remediation techniques

(e.g., using mycorrhizae to spur plant growth) and filtration technologies (e.g. using fungi to lower bacterial

levels in contaminated water). The US Patent and Trademark Office can be searched for patents related to the

oreganoonspoon1 265x165 Oregano Benefits: Growing Your Own Medicine
An herb whose name means “mountain joy”, oregano is a savored spice widely used in Italian, Mediterranean, and Mexican dishes. But few know just how healthy this herb can be. As with many flavorful kitchen herbs, when you cook with oregano, you are getting far more than a flavorful punch—you’re also receiving a range of health and healing benefits. And if you wanted to experience oregano benefits by growing oregano yourself, you’ll be happy to know that raising this herb from a seed is fun and easy.
Medicinally, it’s similarly been used for centuries. In traditional Chinese medicine and European folk medicine, it’s been useful to treat and prevent a variety of ailments—ailments it can still successfully treat today.

Oregano is packed with nutrition. It’s said to be a rich source of vitamin K (important in blood and bone health) and manganese (a trace mineral important in bone, blood, and hormonal health). It’s a good source of fiber for the amount used, and is loaded with antioxidants.

Like it’s cousins of the mint family (thyme, rosemary), oregano contains phytonutrients like thymol and rosmarinic acid. These are potent antioxidants that protect the cells from oxidative stress. Per weight, oregano has been shown to have antioxidant activity 42 times more potent than apples and even 4 times more potent than blueberries.

It also has antibacterial properties. Oils in oregano like thymol and carvacrol inhibit the growth of bacteria including staphylococcus aureus. A study from Mexico found oregano to be more successful at treating the bacterial infection Giaria lamblia than the antibiotic most commonly prescribed for the ailment. It may also combat bacteria like that of E.Coli and salmonella (food-borne pathogens).

    Pineapple's Amazing Healing Properties Revealed

How To Eat Pineapple To Get The Benefits of Bromelain

Bromelain extracts are actually composed of a variety of substances, including peroxidase, acid phosphatase, calcium, and protease inhibitors. But the main active ingredients are two enzymes known as fruit and stem bromelain, respectively.  Keep in mind that bromelain's potential therapeutic activity, depends entirely on how you take it. When consumed on an empty stomach, the plant's enzyme will enter the blood and exert systemic action. When consumed with food, its activity will mostly be expended on helping the body to break down dietary proteins, easing the body's digestive burden.

Bromelain is an example of something we eat that actually eats us back. Commonly used as a meat tenderizer, when used appropriately it can tenderize our overly inflammed and fibrin-congested muscles and connective tissues with its enzymes.

Word of Caution: Bromelain's fibrinolytic properties can contribute to thinning the blood, so those on blood-thinning medications must be careful, especially when consuming part of the bromelain-rich core. Also, bromelain has the ability to enhance the absorption of other nutrients and drugs due to its ability to modulate intestinal permeability. This can be a good thing, for instance, if one is trying to absorb more of a therapeutic herb or nutrient, but a bad thing if one does not wish to disrupt the delicate pharmacokinetics of the bodily absorption and distribution of potent drugs.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among

major fruits and protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

Overview: Strawberry, Fragaria vesca L. [Fam. Rosaceae] is perennial plant indigenous to Europe. Although there are several varieties of wild strawberries, all of the species have similar medicinal properties. The leaves are a diuretic, astringent, and tonic and can be made into a mild and aromatic tea, which is most often used to treat diarrhea, intestinal and urinary complaints. Other traditional, though unsubstantiated, uses for strawberry leaf tea include leucorrhoea, catarrh (mucous) of the bladder, dysentery, rheumatism, rash, respiratory complaints, tension, and water retention. Strawberry leaves may also be added to bath water for aches and pains or used as a mouth and throat gargle. The German Commission E recommends preparations made from wild strawberry leaves for external use in treating rashes, as well as internally for treating gastrointestinal catarrh (mucous), diarrhea, intestinal toning, liver health maintenance, catarrh of respiratory passages, rheumatism, nervousness, bladder health maintenance, gravel, fever, as a diuretic and in support of vascular health. The leaf is also recognized as a blood purifier and is indicated for treating night sweats, to stimulate digestion, in anemia, as a tonic, to reduce profuse menstruation and, finally, to support natural loss of weight. The Commission E notes that activity in the indications has not been adequately substantiated. The anti-ulcer properties of water-soluble procyanidins prepared by fermentation of tannins from Fragaria vesca have also been studied. Complexes of procyanidins and cimetidine (an antiulcer drug) were prepared. The procyanidins increased the water-solubility of the cimetidine and prevented undesirable nitrosamine formation in the stomach by blocking its cyanamide function. An antibiotic, fragarin, has been isolated from strawberry leaves and may be a new kind of preformed antimicrobial compound (phytoanticipin). Antioxidant activity in the fruits and leaves of strawberry, blackberry and raspberry vary by developmental stage and leaves were found to have higher antioxidant activity.

Active Ingredients: Strawberry leaves contain: Condensed tannins, ellagitannins, including pedunculagin and agrimoniin; flavonoids and proanthocyanidins; a small amount of ascorbic acid; and a very small amount of essential oil. An antibiotic, fragarin, has been isolated from strawberry leaves. Guanosine diphosphate derivatives of D-xylose, D-mannose, D-glucose and D-galactose have been identified in mature strawberry leaves.
Suggested Amount: Strawberry leaves may be taken as a tea. To make the infusion pour boiling water over 1 gram of crushed strawberry leaf, steep for 5-10 minutes, and then strain. For diarrhea, drink several cups per day. (1 teaspoon crushed leaf = ca. 1 gram).
    Drug Interactions: None known.
Contraindications: Strawberry leaf may elicit allergic reactions in people hypersensitive to strawberries. Do not use if you have known allergy to this plant.
    Side Effects: None known.

Vitamins are substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally. There are 13 vitamins your body needs. They

are vitamins ACDEK and the B vitamins(thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin

B-12 and folate). You can usually get all your vitamins from the foods you eat. Your body can also make vitamins D and K.

People who eat a vegetarian diet may need to take a vitamin B12 supplement.

Each vitamin has specific jobs. If you have low levels of certain vitamins, you may develop a deficiency disease. For

example, if you don't get enough vitamin D, you could develop rickets. Some vitamins may help prevent medical problems.

    Vitamin A prevents night blindness.

The best way to get enough vitamins is to eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods. In some cases, you may need to take a

daily multivitamin for optimal health. However, high doses of some vitamins can make you sick.

    *  Vitamin C is said to have a fat burning quality so by adding citrus fruits to your diet you are benefiting yourself in many other ways as well as the boost. Choices such as lemons, oranges, grapefruit and limes are excellent on their own or added to your foods. There are many recipes which utilize these items and the taste is a bonus.
Don't forget tomatoes which are also a fruit high in vitamin C. Essential for healing and cell metabolism.

Natural acids from fruits have been given a bad name for causing acid reflux e.t.c, but in truth these acids actually help neutralise the bad acids metabolised in the body as by-product of foods ingested e.g. meats & sugars.
Pectin is also a nutrient found in fruits such as apples and berries. Like the lecithin discussed previously, this nutrient will help against fat absorption into the cells.

Drinking Cold water after a meal Could = Cancer!

Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this applies to you. It's nice to have a cold drink after a

meal, however, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you've just consumed, which slows digestion. Once

this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It

will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.

It is best to drink hot soup or warm water (teas highly recommended) after a meal.

    Benefits of Water

Body has to expend energy to warm up water in order to use it.
Helps to cool down the body after workout/exercise.
Constricts blood vessels, this reduces hydration and absorption ability.
Solidify fats from food, causing body to work harder to digest.

Soothes blood vessels, allows better hydration.
Helps move the fats along, reducing
risks of clogged arteries, and allows better digestion.
Helps to flush the kidneys and improve bowel movements.
When having fever, warm water reduces the body’s effort to fight the virus.

WATERMELON - Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which

helps boost our immune system. Also a key source of lycopene, the cancer-fighting oxidant. Also found in watermelon:

    Vitamin C and Potassium.
