 I am Prof G C Nandi. Currently, working as the Director( Offg)  of  the premier  Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. Also performed the duties of the DIRECTOR from Jan 2014-April 2014 during the critical phase of transition of the institute. 

I try to motivate my students towards creativity and teach them how to learn! It is a wonderful experience for me to interact with such talented young minds. I teach them various subjects and learn many things from them!
My passion is  to create robots which will interact with us intelligently in a social environment. At IIIT-Allahabad, I have developed a Robotics and Artificial Intelligence laboratory which is considered to be one of the best in our country.I envision one day every household will have one or two robots who will take care of the elderly persons and perform various routine, monotonous and dirty household jobs. Also it will share emotions with us, give us company in old age and take care of our health when our near and dear ones will be away from us in their busy  professional lives. We do intensive research so that it becomes reality someday! 
We have recently  developed a technology for AMAL (Adaptive Modular Active Leg), which is controlled by Biologically Inspired CPG (Central Pattern Generator). It can give maximum comfort to an amputee with minimum cost (approximately US $ 260 as on Sept., 2012). For me robotics is a framework where we can develop many new and sophisticated  technologies and test them  for their real life implementation.
My team (Under graduate students, Masters students, Ph.D scholars ) is working dedicatedly in the area of Machine Learning and its application in developing intelligent systems and technology. 

Our robotics research and teaching is strongly based on Machine Intelligence. For creating intelligent  robots we use Markov Processes (HMM), Simulated Annealing, Dynamic Baysian Network, Artificial Neural Network, Fuzzy Logic, Genetic Algorithm, Support Vector Machines, Deep Neural Network etc.)
Our current research is focused on:
  • Developing a strong FRAMEWORK for Gesture based communications with Humanoid Robots
  • Creating Technologies for Mining Temporal Patterns for Humanoid robots
  • Creating new methodologies for secured agent based communications  
  • Knowledge Discovery in Dynamic Social Network
  • On Effective Human-Robot Interactions Based on Recognition and Association 
  • Human Robot Interaction Using Multiple Modes 
  • Development of Learning Based Computational Model for Bipedal Walking using Hybrid Automata
