The Little Prince

As You Like It

The Little Prince

Medfield's school construction program, which had been ongoing since Gazebo's founding, finally wrapped up in 2005. With the opening of the refurbished High School, Medfield finally boasted two theatrical stages. Gazebo decided to stay at the T. A. Blake Middle School. While demand for the stage there is much lower than at the High School, the low demand allowed Gazebo to take over the stage for longer time periods and at better times of the year. Gazebo also entered into an agreement with Loretta Porter-Fahey, the Middle School drama director, to pool resources and improve the Middle School auditorium over the long term. The Little Prince was the first Gazebo production to take advantage of the new stage availability.

Co-directors Deni Mayer and Debbi Finkelstein directed a cast of 15, but only 2 of the 15 were adults. Three weeks before opening night the Producer resigned, leaving much of the behind-the-scenes positions unfilled. The Gazebo Board scrambled to jointly mount the production, with cast member Cynthia Small acting as de facto Producer. Many of the cast member's parents pitched in at the last minute. It was truly a community production.

Performances were given on March 31 and April 1 & 2, to a total audience of approximately 200.

As You Like It

Sometimes it seemed like we wouldn't last this long, but the Gazebo Players were proud to present their fifth anniversary free Shakespeare in the Park production of As You Like It.

Professional director David Logan-Morrow agreed to direct the production. Perhaps due to his notoriety, or the increasing profile of the Gazebo Players within the theatrical community, the production drew actors from further away than ever before. Cast members came from places as far away as Duxbury, Salem, and Ayer to be in the production. The increased area didn't help with the perpetual community theater problem of finding enough males. Director Logan-Morrow's solution was to cast women in some of the male roles, and have them play the roles as women. Notable among those was the role of Silvius, who marries Phebe at the end of the show, leading to the first same sex wedding on stage in Medfield.

The production was also memorable for the original music composed by Zane Kuchera. Shakespeare's script is punctuated with many songs, and Composer Kuchera set Shakespeare's words to music, allowing the cast to sing Shakespeare's words as well as say them.

Performances were given at the Gazebo on July 15, 16, and 23. The July 22 performance was moved inside to the Pfaff Center because of rain. Performances were given at Bird Park in Walpole on July 29 and 30. In a new twist, the cast played to the "back" of the Pavilion in Bird Park, rather than the "front" as in previous years. The 6 inch drop from the stage to the ground in the back (as opposed to the 6 foot drop in the front) allowed the cast to leave the stage and wen through the audience at times, just the way they do routinely at performances given at the Gazebo.
