Garmin StreetPilot C510 and TTS (Text to Speach)

How to make your C 510 pronounce street names (This how-to should work for your C530 as well)

Please note: This information is supplied for your interest and education only. The author disclaims all responsibity for any problems that may ensue. Make you sure you know how to reset your StreetPilot, how to clear the user data, how to restore its files and how to dismantle it to unplug the battery if it comes to it.

Follow these steps at your own risk!

Based on an idea by Phil some guys ("flocke1" and "Ralph525") on http://forum.pocketnavigation.de did more experiments and two achieved to have their GPS pronounce the streetnames - "text-to-speech". That measne you drive and the unit does not onlöy say: "turn right", no, it says: "turn right into bakerstreet". When reading about that I just HAD TO HAVE THAT, too. :-)

It was quite tricky in the beginning but after some experiments and several reboots my C510 was talking street names, too. The process of installation however seemed very complicated and I even had to work on my windows installation because of problems with an USB-driver, so I checked out a different approach and after a test of driving a few hundred kilometers with several stops and powering on/off the Garmin I had my C510 still telling street names. I even found a way to install some more languages - without the need of USB drivers by simply copying and editing files.

If you want that, too, here is what worked for me.

Preparation:

- MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL FILES OF YOUR C510!!!! (Take care to include the "hidden" files in your backup!! - if anything goes wrong don't blame me - you have been warned!!).

If necessary free up some space on your Garmin - you will need about 30MB / language available . Then get the required TTS files from the Garmin site   (www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00401-20):

for English speaking people there are
Emily (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1041) and
Daniel (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1299) described as 'British' English and Americans get
Jack (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1297) and
Jill (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1007).

German speaking people will want
 Steffi
(http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1049
new link: http://www8.garmin.com//software/Voice,German-Steffi_TTS__140.exe
or  Yannick (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1331)
new link: http://www8.garmin.com//software/Voice,German-Yannick_TTS__110.exe.

PLEASE NOTE: THE NEW FIRMWARE 5.50 (published 29.3. 2007) and later will disable TTS!!!
Better don't make that firmware update or you will loose that nice feature again. If a later firmware is already installed you might consider to downgrade to version 5.40.
(Garmin, I do not understand that step. TTS is a great way to make navigation more safe. Please don't make your products worse than they could be.)

-> If looking for the right  firmware for your C510, you might find it here:  http://gpsinformation.org/perry/streetpilot/c5x0/ or here, on http://atzi22.googlepages.com/

I personally prefer version 4.1 because it shows a nice list of existing the traffic probs received from TMC. If you receive your GPS with firmware 5.5 or higher installed you might consider to downgrade..

Steps:
0) Big fat disclaimer: This information is supplied for your interest and education only. The author disclaims all responsibity for any problems that may ensue. Make sure you know how to reset your StreetPilot, how to clear the user data, how to restore its files and how to dismantle it to unplug the battery if it comes to it. So, if not done yet, it's time to - MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL FILES OF YOUR C510!!!!

The steps are explained using the streetpilot2720-voice-uk-tts-emily_130.exe from the garmin site.

1) download the tts file streetpilot2720-voice-uk-tts-emily_130.exe the Garmin site.

2) unzip the streetpilot2720-voice-uk-tts-emily_130.exe into English_British_Emily_0130.rgn and updater.exe using for example winrar or 7-zip. (That means: do NOT doubleclick the .exe-File streetpilot2720-voice-uk-tts-emily_130.exe but use 7-zip instead to open it and extract the English_British_Emily_0130.rgn)

3) use xvi32 (a freeware hex editor) to delete the first 60 bytes from English_British_Emily_0130.rgn so it begins with:
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 1E 01 6A 00 00 00 1B 44 53 4B ... (for Emily 1.30) or
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 28 0A 6A 00 00 00 62 44 53 4B .. (for Emily 1.40 or check out  http://garminc510.tts.googlepages.com/ttsforc510-details for other language files)

4) rename the edited English_British_Emily_0130.rgn to English_British_Emily.vpm and make a copy of it and call it 000.NEW (that is "zero zero zero .NEW")

5) remove the SD card from your C510 and connect the C510 to your PC using USB - a window will automatically pop up or look for a new drive letter in "my computer".

EDIT 22.4.07, 19:35: "JSK" from the german pocketnavigation.de - forum just found out that the following two steps are not neccesary - it works without the *.sum - files as well :-) - so you can just go on to step 8, if you feel like. 6 and 7 stay here for the meanwhile... For me it works without the *.sum file, as well.

6) open the Garmin/voice folder in that drive, look for a file called english_british_.sum
7) make a copy of that file in the same folder and call it English_British_Emily.sum

8) copy the two files you prepared before called English_British_Emily.vpm and 000.NEW from your PC into voice folder of your Garmin C510

9) get a bit nervous while it copies (might take a few minutes, a cup of tea might be just right now)

18.3.07, 18:28 Daniel asked me to make a correction in the next pargraph:

10) /disconnect the USB from your C510 by pulling the cable/ after copying finished, use the "safely remove hardware" option in your windows taskbar to disconnect your Garmin from the PC (*). /the C519 will automatically restart./ Restart your C510 manually, open the tools on your Garmin, select the new TTS voice, allow your C510 to restart again (it will ask for that) and you will now have it talk the street names :-)) - even after you switched it off and turn it on again :-)) - it's permanent now.

If this does NOT work, you did not follow the steps correctly. Or you don't have enough free space on your Garmin. Or something else happened. You might even need to reset your Garmin. Remember: This is an experiment!. It worked for me and may or may not work for you...

Additions:
18.3.07, 14:12:
"Wolfgang" from the German pocketnavigation.de forum just postet a UNIX command he used to cut the first 60 bytes of the TTS voice "Steffi":
dd if=Deutsch__Steffi_140.rgn of=Deutsch__Steffi.vpm bs=60 skip=1
This way no hex-Editor is required, a UNIX computer will do just fine. And - as far as I remember - there is dd for windows...

(*) Garmin describe this process in their english manual of the C510 on page 17
"When you are finished transferring files, double-click the "Unplug or
Eject" icon in your Windows system tray. Select "USB Mass Storage Device",
and click STOP. Select the c510 drives, and click OK. You can unplug the USB
cable from your c510 now."

(Garmin, I do not understand that step. TTS is a great way to make navigation more safe. Please don't make your products worse than they could be.)

BTW2: Phil Hornby, who was first to have TTS on a Garmin C510 has designed some nice software to build/edit GPX files. HERE is a link to his site and HERE (scroll down) is some more information about that.

BTW3:  "CosmoMC" has designed some nice cars you can download and use in your C510: have a look here:

Looking for a SD card for your Garmin C510? I personally use the Xflash 2GB card available at amazon.de and like the performance.
