Garden Brunch Cafe adds weekday breakfast club

A North Nashville café has added a weekday breakfast club in a bid to attract more executives, government officials and employees from downtown.

The nearly 2-year-old Garden Brunch Café added the Wednesday morning hours this month. The restaurant is also open Friday through Sunday.

“It grew from a lot of people … who work downtown but live in the suburbs and don’t want to drive here on the weekends. It is a way to give them an opportunity to see us during the week,” said Jennifer Carpenter, who owns and operates the café with her husband, Karl.

The restaurant, in a pre-Civil War home the couple owns at 924 Jefferson St., used to be open Tuesdays through Sundays, but the cafe reduced its hours to 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.

Efforts to expand with a three-course dinner menu, poetry nights and live jazz tanked last summer.

The Wednesday morning breakfasts are the latest attempt to boost sales.

“I am trying to figure out what works. We are a young company, so we have to find a way to at least break even,” Jennifer said. “With no financing, we’re supporting the business with all of our savings. We’re watching our savings dwindle down to nothing and supporting our home, too. We are just now almost breaking even.”

The $8.50 breakfast buffet includes muffins, quiche, grits, sautéed potatoes, turkey breakfast meats and fresh fruit.

It has become a favorite for Metro government officials and local attorneys, and Jennifer said she hopes it will attract customers who want to interact with those business leaders over coffee and pancakes.

“Let’s get people here for camaraderie and networking,” she said.
