Our current president Andrew Kovaleski performed in a masterclass given by Dr. Timothy McAllister on July 13th in Strasbourg, France at the SaxOpen 17th World Saxophone Congress. Dr. McAllister received the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance, making him the only musician to win a Grammy playing classical saxophone. He is currently the Associate Professor of Saxophone at The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Andrew performed the first movement of Denisov's Sonata for Saxophone and Piano with accompanist Liz Ames. "This piece is significant in the history of saxophone music for beginning the normalization of extended technique in today's saxophone culture, which gave the modern saxophone music we hear today the precedent for its trademark sound," said Andrew on the Denisov. A staple of saxophone repertoire, this piece is extremely particular when it comes to articulations and dynamics.

Dr. McAllister spent his time with Andrew in the masterclass focusing on the tenseness in his body, his airstream remaining engaged and fast, and precise articulations in the piece. Our president told us that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. "It was an honor to be chosen to play on the masterclass," he said, "even if I didn't hear about the fact that I was playing until 18 hours before it happened."

Andrew has spent the past month in France studying saxophone under some of the great saxophone players and teachers in Europe. Gamma Omicron is extremely proud of our president for everything he has accomplished and learned during his time abroad. We are excited for him to return home and share his newfound knowledge with us as we all continue to strive for the highest in our musicianship.
