Guides are all valid and working checked on 31-05-2011
- A Google Account
- A SIP client (X-Lite for PC or Fring for Mobile devices)
- The Official Google Voice App (its for Android and iOS Devices, if you need it on iOS and cant find it in the apple store use Installous its a jailbreak thing and you can find the app on there)
Bria for the iPhone, it is £4.99 on the Apple Store and can handle IPTel SIPS configured with google voice, you can also get this for free from installous but my rule is if it is a good product go and buy it. you can also record ANY of the calls pushed into Bria but you have to confirm the laws in your area and the area you are calling before you do that, and it is very clear quality. to export them i think you must use itunes and then the apps files section, but i would just pull it from the app with iphone explorer on PC.)
If you dont have any of the requirements (Above) get them now and set them up and install them and come back to here.
Okay now we need to get you a SIP account (this will let your Device connect to a number that we will get later) I used this to get my sip account: http://serweb.iptel.org/user/reg/ you will need to fill that out, the only thing i say you MUST use is a valid email as they will confirm it is activated by it.
first name: [ANY NAME WILL DO]
last name: [ANY NAME WILL DO]
email: [USE A VALID EMAIL YOU CAN ACCESS]
phone: [USE ANY NUMBER BUT HAS TO BE ALL DIGITS AND 12 DIGITS LONG i.e. 00000000000]
your timezone: [ANY WILL WORK]
pick your user name: [SET YOUR OWN USERNAME HERE THIS WILL BE NEEDED LATER]
pick password: [ANY PASSWORD THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER OR WRITE DOWN]
confirmation password: [CONFIRM PASSWORD]
now check the box that says "I accept" then click the Register button
you will have info on screen... but you will not need that right now.
So we move on to getting it a actual number for it to be called when you register it with google go to this website http://phone.ipkall.com/
*NOTE: if you dont have any calls within every three months they will cancle the number.... dont worry you can fix this if it cancles but you should log in once every month or so and just call your google number so it connects your IPKALL (SIP) number to the answer machine.
fill out the Boxes
Choose your account type: [KEEP SIP SELECTED]
Choose Area Code for your IPKall Number: [I USED 360 AND IT WORKED, BUT THIS CAN BE CHANGED LATER IF YOU GET AN ERROR WITH GOOGLE]
SIP username: [THE USERNAME YOU JUST USED ON IPTEL.ORG]
Hostname or IP address: [IPTEL.ORG]
Email Address: [MUST BE A VALID EMAIL YOU HAVE ACCESS TO, THEY SEND YOU THE NUMBER TO PUT IN GOOGLE]
Password: [A PASSWORD YOU CAN REMEMBER OR WRITE DOWN]
# of Seconds to ring before hanging up: [SET IT TO 120, IF NOT ALREADY]
Complete the Capcha and click submit;
Note: if you get a "You have already registered a account" and you know you havent just reset your router and try again or use a different email address and username.
When you dont get a error message you need to check your Email that you used;
Note: The email may be in the Spam/Junk folder
the email will say the following but where i have put X's there are numbers;
" Thank you for signing up. Your IPKall phone number is: XXX-XXX-XXXX "
Now go to; http://www.google.com/voice and sign in with your google account.
Dont worry the "This is unavalible in your country" message is normal thats when we go here http://www.hidemyass.com/proxy-list/
This is a Proxy list find a set of USA ip's and ports that you will need for the first time set up of the Google Voice account.
find a HTTP ip and port number then a socks4/5 ip and port number then press ALT on your keyboard and click tools (at the top) and click options from the drop down menu.
On the options window click the top right it should be called "Advanced" then click the Network tab in there.
Now at the top of that page you will see a heading called "Connection" click on the Settings button
Click on the "Manual proxy configuration" button then put the HTTP proxy and port into the box for HTTP proxy and port boxes and then put the socks4/5 ip and port into the SOCKS host and port box then click okay
now go to http://www.google.com/voice again and you will see it should guide you through the Google Voice set-up the most availible number i have found when using this for the usa though is the 424 prefix but you can pick any availible number by searching for it.
*if you have a out of US error again or the page timed out error try a different set of proxys from the list*
*if you get a White page with black writing on saying about the CDN and the services etc just wait and it will load the page after*
if you have not got these errors now continue
now you need to go to your SIP client and use the following settings;
Username: [YOUR IPTEL.ORG USERNAME]
Password: [YOUR IPTEL.ORG PASSWORD]
Note: to put these settings for Fring in you need to tap more>add-ons>SIP>other
UserID: [YOUR IPTEL.ORG USERNAME]
Password: [YOUR IPTEL.ORG PASSWORD]
Note: You put these settings for X-lite in the Softphone>Account Settings
For Bria for the iPhone:
Account Name: [IPTEL.ORG]
Display as: [LEAVE THIS ALONE AS IT WILL USE THE AUTO INCOMING CALLER ID WILL SHOW UP]
Username: [YOUR IPTEL.ORG USERNAME]
Now on this page under Account Name move the slider on the Enabled line to [ON] and press Save
Note: you put these settings for Bria for the iPhone in the Settings>Accounts>Add Account> Generic SIP Account
now put your number that you got from IPKALL in your email in the Google Voice box where it asks for one.
*if it says the number has already been used, go to http://phone.ipkall.com/login.asp and log in then click cancle account and sign back up and use a different Area Code and try again*
Now you will have a 2 Digit number to put in on your SIP when you press Call me now it will connect to your SIP Client (it works on both X-lite and Fring) you may need to press the buttons for 1 second each if you get "Im sorry i didnt quite catch that" message.
it will activate the account and you can hang up the SIP Client and set your voicemail settings up later.
you now can go back to the Firefox Proxy settings and use the "No Proxy" setting
you now have a working Google voice account time to explain how to use it on a mobile device outside the US or Canada
Go to your official Google Voice App and login, you will now be using google voice on your phone, you will receive texts that are sent to your google number on your phone as push notifications and are viewable in your official Google Voice App the same goes with Voicemail.
You will need to open up your Official Google Voice App and type in the number and click text in dialer and then send the text. you can also select from contacts using the contacts icon in the Dialer.
You will need to have Fring or another SIP client installed (like Bria) on the mobile device (you dont need to have any credit on the SIP client) you then go to the Official Google Voice App and go to the Dialer and type the number you want to call in the US or Canada and press Call. You also can select a contact to call in the dialer by pressing the Contacts icon. you will be asked what phone to call from by default the SIP number you have used to sign up will be called Home press that and wait for your Fring App to tell you that you are being called by Google voice to connect your call to the person you put in the dialer. Accept the call on Fring and wait for it to connect to the other person and you will now be talking for free to people in the US or Canada on your Mobile Device without needing to be at your computer to dial or receive the call via X-Lite.
" When you're on the phone with someone that called your GV number, or that you called through GV, and someone else calls you, you'll get a tone and can press 5 to add them to the call. You can have up to 4 people on the same call. When you're on the phone, you can not add people. They have to call your GV number.

There are no charges for calls connecting to usa numbers i.e. using Fring or X-lite with your IPTEL.org sip with your IPKALL account you will be able to have it as if it was a normal usa number so it will work the same.
Note: for best quality calls be on a highspeed wifi connection.
